Newbie with a Voodoo prop height concern

Hey all, great site with tonnes of information!

My son and I recently purchased a hydrostream Voodoo as a father son project. In searching for a motor I came across a very clean low hour 30hp Yamaha standard shaft.

    My questions are this

    A) Hydrostream recommends a long shaft for this boat, will this be a concern with a standard shaft?

    B) The boat came with a set back plate. I considered using it soley as its there, is this a good idea?

    C) A lot of the little voodoos Ive seen have a foil fin on them? I presume to help plane out?

My son is only 12 so im looking for advice on a safe learning set up, not a speed set up at all.

    Thank you in advance!

    Mark

Hi Mark. There is a lot of useful info on this site, and a lot of Canadians are here as well. But that hull is not well known in the States, you may find more useful info on the Canadian sites. HPBC has a stronger following for similar boats to yours, actually the prior owner posts there too. Good luck with the build, maybe see you around next summer!

Some people cut the transoms down to run 15" shafts back in the day. Maybe the setback plate will let you run the 15". The Voo Doo transom was 24" so even a 20" motor was high.

I used to have a Voo Doo and still miss it. When I bought mine the consensus was top of bullet at bottom of pad for cottage use. Mine worked great like that. No foil, over hub props planed OK.

    Mark,

You can make either a 15" or 20" motor work on the voodoo. You will need some type of set back on the boat with the lower hp motors.

Is the motor you are looking at 15" or 20"?

Rick Cole out of Parry Sound is a good source as he has a voodoo and is a yamaha nut. He runs the HPBC site

    Cheers,
