Depends on the gun. What R you using? My hvlp I use a 1.5 tip For my binks #7 siphon gun I use the #36 with the fogger air horn. I like to shoot several light coats to cover, let sit over night, then lightly sand with some 400 and shoot one last finish coat. Usually get no runs or defects. One coat will be easy to get shiny. You can't buff the awlgrip....

refer to the TDS and adjust for your spray equipment, habits and environment and if you want to get very heizenburg use a zahn cup
example- if you are spraying in a well heated down draft booth you can lay more paint, out in the open and cooler weather you want to cut down the tip size
I use a 1.2 and would even try a 1.1 but my gun doesnt offer that tip size- that is with my tekna prolite

When using 2 part single stage, (awl-grip, imron, )etc. wherever you're dialed in clear- wise in base/clear set up is a good place to start. 1.5 tip on our sata gun for clear on our set up was ideal. 1.2 could dump it on and cause runs if not careful and moving quick. And that was in FLORIDA (hot!) A little adjustment is always necessary pressure and flow- wise depending on temp, humidity, psi of compressor, regulator setting, etc. If I remember correctly, even with the 1.5 tip you move a little quicker than with the clear. This is what I found out with Imron (DuPont) product. Hope its of some value to you!

Thanks for the replies. A lil background. I'm going to be painting a 22 Velocity. I've primed it with Awlgrip 545 High build primer, and a second coat with regular 545, and the topside is Awlgrip Canary Yellow. Ive spent hours sanding-trying to get it perfect! Im going to spray it next week in a friends shop. I expect the shop to be 55-60 degrees. Ive only sprayed once before (a Mini Hawk) and was satisfied with the results. This is my first "big" project spraying. I did all the glass work myself-new transom, stringers and bulkheads. This is an IO to OB conversion. In order for it NOT to look "aftermarket" or "Home built", I designed a well for the engine. I'm pretty happy with the results. I'm working on the last steps before painting-sanding, sanding, and more sanding. I keep hearing its "all in the prep". I havent picked up a spray gun yet (hurricane Sandy ruined my last gun and compressor) Any suggestions? I've read some good things about some budget sprayers. Most seem to come with a 1.4 to 1.8mm. The plan is to bring it to the shop on 11/2 and paint the following day or two! Thanks again, I'll try and post pics when its done!

I dont spray much of it, probably only a handful of times and its been mostly smaller stuff. largest thing was a viper.
among gel coats other paints I mainly spray Imron (MS+EU+industrial 3.5), and awlCRAFT

are you saying your particular 1.2 dumps more paint then your 1.5 or are you getting your tips reversed?

shop meaning body shop or just shop? is there a sufficient air supply? some guns are air hogs you dont want to run out of compressor
inside a booth or the floor?
if its a body shop ask if you can borrow one of his spray guns

Its a vacant shop (not a body shop)-but I have access to the owners 500 gal compressor next door-so air isn't an issue.
