Is a setback bracket going to rip my transom off?

I have a 13 foot Glen L Tuffy runabout and I would like to put a setback bracket on it. The motor is a 1985 60 HP 2 cyl Evinrude short shaft ( I believe around 190 lbs) and I'm worried if I put a setback bracket on it will put too much stress on the transom. The transom is fiberglassed 1.5" mahogany plywood with a 1/4 inch aluminum plate on both sides. Do you guys think it's safe to put some setback on it? If so, how many " should it be? Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. I will try to add pictures later.

    Thanks,
    Cal

The motor in the pictures is a 50 Johnson not the 60hp evinrude. The Johnson was just to get the boat in the water and the 60 is the modded motor.

If there is no issue now with the 50, I would suspect that a slightly heavier motor with a bracket should be OK too. That is only my guess. Probably the longer the bracket, the more risk though. btw cool boat.

Plans on the hull say 200lbs. You've enough wood but how did you tie it all together. Follow the plans or extra bracing, I'd still go light triple an raise it , probably no setback needed. You'll likely fly plenty without setback. Level and fast! Is it a 15 or 20" , looks like 15? Good looking boat.

Thanks! Yah it's a 15". It took me and my dad 4 years to build it! Now that it's out of the garage I get to work on my new 60hp!

After building, rebuilding and modifying a few boats over the yrs and using my construction background I have found that as you increase stress (load) you should distribute it over the largest possible area. I like the large aluminum plate on tha rear of the transom....is the interior plate as large? Are there knees on the transom? Regardless of the weight increase the increase in setback and raising the mota will cause the most stress increase due to leverage.

Thanks Gary! The aluminum plate on the other side of the transom is the same width but only 5 1/2" tall. There is one knee, made of 1 1/2 " mahogany plywood. The boat is rated for a 4 stroke 40hp when built to plans ( without fiberglass coat and aluminum plate) and is designed to be a 4 seater. My dad and I built it as a 2 seater so there is much less stress on the transom because there can only be 2 people in the boat at a time instead of 4. I think I'm ok to do the setback bracket, I just wanted to be 100% confident.

Where the transom meets the rear deck just at and outside the splash to the outer corners, how is it joined?

It is a butt joint with some other pieces of mahogany around it for support. For all of the mahogany connections on the boat we used G2 epoxy and stainless steel fasteners. In blue, two 1" by 1" pieces of mahogany. In green, 2" by 1" mahogany. In red, 2" by 1"

Be a show off, put the build pictures up! How much set back were you thinking? Did the boat respond well to a bit of trim and prop for bow lift with the 50?

Of course I'm gonna show off a bit, I have to! Ive been looking at the Bobs Machine manual jackplate which has a 5" setback. With the 50 I could get it up to the second trim peg with no problem, third peg with some porpoising, and I couldn't plane with it at the fourth peg. I knew the 50 was just gonna be my motor for this summer, so I didn't bother getting a new prop on it. Next summer i will be working with Kawartha prop repair to get the exact one I want. Pitch, cup, bow lift, and all that good stuff!

They'll fix you with a good prop, Raker type maybe. Trying it without setback first. You're still young, give it a few years you might need the setback and triple CHRYSLER( they made a 17" for a very short time , 79/80 special sport edition 85hp Charger , dark colours, impossible to find, light just over 200lbs, powerflow lu ) when you put a few pounds on and have a passenger with you!

    Nice work!
    That thing looks pretty cool.
Get in touch with Rowboat. He lives in Peterborough, has a very good relationship with the guys at Kawartha prop and can make you whatever setback you need. You could also do a setback / manual jackplate.
Check out Fastboatscanada & HPBC. There’s a wealth of local knowledge that would be happy to help out.

if it was me I would start with adding power trim and then try some props. After that if you need more lift, then add setback.
