    This is a much better article about the actual issue rather than just the politics.

    You bought it, you own it. Thats it. The issue as I understand it is they claim the software is protected intellectual property so the fix is to include maintenance and service capacity within the OS so the owners can repair without needing to "hack" the software. Lots of manus doing this too and its a royal pita

    Class action should be aimed at including access for service and repair by default. Then theres no need to access the intellectual property within the code. Done

    That's the manufacturer protecting their dealer base..... making it so you have no choice but to get the dealer to fix it at a high rate. Mother Mercury is headed that way and Vovlo Penta has been doing it for years.......

    try fixing a most modern diesels, dealer or you cant
    can you fix an e-tec without a dealer?
    its the emission laws that forced this issue, then copyright law protects it and then the manufacturer doesnt want to lose that intellectual property to a competitor so they lock it up

    same a microsoft has been doing for years, you agree to the agreement or dont buy it.

    Clearly the push is on to control property that is purchased. The consumer base has three options;

    1. eat it
    2. hack it
    3. fight it

    All take work. Option 1 your work serves the interests of the corp. Option 2 your work serves your interests, but it proves challenging. Option 3 makes the corps work for the customer.

    Which one sounds best to you?

    The intellectual property security angle makes ZERO sense. The property is loaded onto all modules already. Adding the ability to service the machine within this does nothing to risk losing property. Thats like saying adding photoshop to a computer risks intellectual property losses from camera manufacturers. Nope, just another tool in the tool box.

    First big company that includes this, will DOMINATE market. Wait and see

    There is a CAN buss that is used for tractors, semi's, busses etc.... a diagnostic port all the same. With the right software, it can be worked on, but the software is not publicly available.

    The big 3 are also lobbying the gov to close an exemption that was made to the copywrite law years ago re auto efi.
    Was ok till cars had one computer and it has control of everything, engine trans abs traction stability control steering etc.
    Now the manufacturers are worrying about liability when you let punters hack your software to repair or modify it.
