Garage floor coating
Daytona, my last 4 homes I have epoxied coated the garage floor rather than painting and it is the only way to go. My current coating has been down 13 years with no peeling. The secret to the job is in the prep. If it has never been painted, buy some muriatic acid and with a long handle scrub brush, brush it and rinse real thorougly, then let it dry for a day before rolling on two coats of Epoxy floor coating. Your local paint supply should be able to order it for you. I have stayed away from the water based epoxies. My garage floor stays so clean sometimes I sometimes walk out in my socks. The floor will look like a showroom if you take your time and don't rush the job. Frank

Natzx7, I have always used Epoxy over either bare concrete or a previously epoxied floor. the problem might be in the adherance to the paint. Do you have any peeling now with the painted floor? If not you might be able to get buy by using a good degreaser to prep it. Frank

This is a link to the epoxy floor covering I was looking into. The only problem I have is that I will have over 500.00 in materials as a "kit" to do this job. I do have bare concrete but have a few cracks to contend with. Is it usually that much or is it just this company?? Thanks guys for the ideas and help.

I sell these resinous flooring systems for a
living and can help you with a high-quality application.
If you have any area that will be exposed to sunlight (such as an open garage door), you will want to consider a polyurethane topcoat for UV resistance, since epoxies will "chalk", or at least fade a bit.
Log on to bhdistributors.com and/or call me Monday @ 800.844.5860 so we can discuss.
BTW, someone mentioned the important thing here is surface preparation. We've long maintained the three keys to our business are:
1) Surface preparation
2) Surface preparation
3) Surface preparation

XS I will contact you, generally the garage door is closed but open fron 5 pm till 10 pm & by that time the sun is west enough no direct light gets in there ( my garage faces south). I do need to fill some cracks and generally clean the floor but it has no bad oil stains or anything like that. I believe it was 530 sq feet total that would be painted and I would like to do a gray color to be neutral but other colors considered. Please leave me your name so I can ask for you or my number is (989) 249 7630 if you need to make contact. Thanks.

Give me a ring when it's convenient,
ask for Eric.
Sounds like you don't have much of a UV issue there, but you still may consider an aliphatic poyurethane topcoat for a durable, high-gloss finish.
We have lots of choices as we represent several manufacturer's of these systems. Can take care of the crack issue as well, you have a few options there also.

You might want to cosider VCT tile. I was going to epoxy mine until I looked at the cost and amount of prep.
I put down black and white VCT, cost about .55 a sqare foot including the glue, I think. Few coats of wax every now and then and it looks great. If you damage a tile, just cut it out and put a new one down. Covers flaws in the floor too.
It may be harder to keep clean though, and you will need to strip it every so often to get tire marks out. Otherwise, colors and patterns are up to you.

KK, I've seen that rustoleum stuff advertised. I will be curious to see your results. I also saw some stuff (epoxy) in Griots Garage, they are real proud of that stuff. I think I figured it would cost me about $1,000 to do my garage.
I would like to do something but am not sure how long I will be staying at the current residence. I am watching this one with interest.Half B - Just one more project away from the promised land.

sherwin williams
i did mine. bought epoxy paint system from sherwin williams a couple of years ago if i remeber correctly it was about $130 for 2 gallons covered about 400 square feet thin coat wish i would have bought more and put it down thicker still looks good though
the only thing i found that will stick to it is fiberglass resin if you let it harden.
