The constant outflow from the Caloosahatchee river kept the red tide away from Sanibel/Captiva, pine island sound and estero bay for many years. Now it's back with a vengance. It's not a coincidence they have stopped the water from flowing this year. The red tide also went up into the mouth of the river for the 1st time ever that I can remember. The idiots disturbed things and the red tide was able to infiltrate into places it could never go before. These people are so fn stupid. It is cause and effect at it's best. But they are so determined to get their way, they won't admit they are wrong.

Must be less water coming down the river to allow salt water up the estuary.
This must be the deep well plans you mentioned, north of Lake O to reduce flow into the lake from Orlando .

There has been plenty of rain in the state to allow some out flow here. They're dumping south and east. I was right by the locks and they were not flowing a drop. This is not normal for this time of year. Storm or not.

Would you say flows are close to natural pre channeling, lock flows?

Where does all the sewerage go in Florida?
Thats a huge source of nitrogen rich, oxygen depleted water that helps let stuff grow that normally wouldn't.
Ad fertilizer and you have a huge problem.
If there was a profit in algea bloom, thats how you would make it

Probably like everywhere else, sewage treatment plants filtered and chlorinated or septic systems and then into the nearest river.
Need to reduce the phosphorus, soaps, fertilizer have all been reduced in content here.

Down here the streets have ditches. The small ditches feed into bigger ditches. Then to canals or buried giant pipes. They all flow down to the river or the gulf. No place to hold and store the water. It used to percolate thru the ground and refresh the limestone aquafiers under the ground where we get most of our potable water. Since every house is built up on 4' of fill dirt (building code)and has ditches to run off the rain water no water stands and filters thru the ground. It's the RUNOFF that is screwing us. Cause....Over crowded subdivisions and multi story condo's. Where I live, water is allowed to stand on the land and perc down into the aquafier. I live in the outskirts of the rural hub on acreage. 1 house per 10 acres is normal density. So I am not a big part of the problem.

What about the sanitary. Storm or rain water runoff can wash a lot of fertilizers and pesticides and soap from driveway car washes as well as dog and animal waste into the rivers causing loading but the urban sanitary load into all the rivers has a major effect. Sometimes urban storm and sanitary are connected in places to take extra storm load or sanitary if a major blockage occurs causing untreated to flow into rivers. This has mostly been corrected in our urban centers.
Your limestone does have a positive effect on the phosphates if rains are allowed to sink in. The total loading numbers that I've read going into Lake O are huge compared to the accepted guidelines.Last edited by FMP; 08-16-2018 at 07:55 AM.

The beaches were closed on Key Biscayne Miami a few weeks ago right at mini lobster season(only reason i really was concerned) and they were recommending not to go in the water due to high bacterial levels from fecal matter.. The news reported that the local officials (liars) said it was from animal runoff due to all the rain, really.... how many freakin animals are along the coast line such bull shizit.. I fly up and down the coast all the time and you can see where the pipes come out leaving a brown trail and dump the ( so called treated water) into the ocean right off the beaches..If it wasn't for the gulf-stream top carry it north and out to sea we would never be able to swim here. I'm sure they dumped raw sewage into the bay and then made up the lame excuse.. So next thing i in the paper is there going to pump raw sewage 10000 feet down into wells, Hmmm.. How long will it take to figure out that was a mistake.. Like was said above, tooo... many people and still building away like nothings wrong.. Dave

Not such a good idear to shiit the bed so to speak. The desert States, NV have amazing water recycling technology at work, making the ugly drinkable. Large scale adaptation in urban areas may help to reduce the problem but...
