merc 150 4S - a lot of throttle left when hit rev limiter??
New 150 4S merc- just enough hours to open it all the way for a moment- Hits 5600 rpm and stops advancing- so ECU or what ever these things have it limiting it to 5600. There is a lot of throttle throw left- is it just extra travel or do I need to step up on prop? The controls were factory installed on boat for a merc 150 EFI 2007-
I have 2017 150 4S on my fishing boat (23 Mako CC) and I never noticed any throttle left on it-
Interesting note - the owners manual for the new 4S motor also lists an "XS" version and a "Seapro" version. I have never even seen an ad for either of those.

Not sure if you're gauges are off, but the standard four stroke revs to 5900 where as the Pro XS 6100 and Sea Pro 5400, I'd run the prop slip calculator below to get a better idea if you're sure you're not just at the limit of what the set up can do.

Limiter normally kicks in about 100 or so after recommend max rpm, just so your not beeping if you slip on a turn or hit some chop. Probably need to pitch up. No telling how much though. I would use the merc prop selector and just put in the boat and weight and see how close your current prop is.

It's at 5900 as the recommend max rpm is 5800, if he's truly only turning 5600 then he could go down one pitch though during cooler weather and the engine makes more power it might be on the limiter then. I always try to prop a boat to just kiss the limiter when in cold weather and running light therefore when it's hot and loaded down I'm as close as possible to the upper end of max working range.

Your right. I goofed got it backwards. I thought it was hitting the limiter
zo6 is right go down a inch or two to get to 5800. Having more throttle just means a you maxed out the power.'06 Tracker All-Fish/Tournament V-18 90 Optimax, 46.8 gps Goal one complete reach 45 mph.

The thing about this 4-stroke is there is no beeping/alarm and the limiter is very soft...

It is just extra travel- closer look at linkage shows the throttle cam bottoming out - there is a spring linkage that allows the throttle to continue to advance - much like timing linkage on a 2.5 2S. Spec sticker say 5000 - 5800 say I think I will stay with current prop at 5600 on a hot summer day-

Ahh the link and sync thing, the 60 4s has that on our pontoon.
Only thing to to do with that is verify the stops are correct, more or less confirmation the shutter opens correct amount. Which it should.
Their used to to be a post breakin adjustment on older models.
5600 of 5800 is good when hot. With 5000-5800 you can play with props a bit if you want.
