Mariner 175
i have an 1989 Mariner 175 on my Pulse 185, I believe it's a 2.4 liter. The motor is like a time capsule as far as appearance, it shines and doesn't have a mark or any fading on it at all.
My question is without breaking the bank for a new motor, or trying to find a clean 200 or 225 to swap the motor out, could someone like Jay Smith build or modify my existing powerhead
to maybe see 225+hp out of my 175 or is it not worth going there? Reading through countless discussions, it appears i can put a 2.5L head on it with a few modifications but where i have carbs and not fuel injection, would i need to find 200/225 carbs and other accessories to actually get the advertised HP out of the new 2.5L powerhead? Thanks in advance for any input.

It would be tough to get 225 out of yours , 200 more like it with mainly bolt ons, that a chrome cyl motor so to have any port work done it would need to be sleeved or rechromed, which I dnt think they do anymore, if u really want the ex power ,I'd sell and go to the 2.5. Also carbs off 2.4 will work with rejetting

Either is fine , all you will need to swap is the 2 piece adapter plate and tuner probably, now if u want you can spend you a few hundred and put some boltons on,and try that route first , I'm sure others will jump in but I'd think that most will agree with me if your dead set on more hp?

Your gonna want a complete drop on plus the adapter plates and tuner , while the powerhead is off you can do solid mounts and pull liner out of the mid for little ex sound also

with the paperwork that I got with the boat, the original owner purchased a set of "blueprinted heads" from some performance shop back in 1993. I tried to look them up but they're no longer in business.
it also has Boyesen reeds that I'm aware of but not really much else as far as bolt on items. That said, 2.5 seems to be the direction I need to go in. Been reading a lot about the 225 Promax head, would that bolt up to my mid section and fit under my current cowl?

Yes it will bolt with the adapter plates and no you will need a cowl for a 2.5

LOTS of fab to get a 225 Pro Max under a clamshell cowl. Swap to 16a electrics (40 amp is too tall to fit under the clamshell), fab brackets for the cowl on the exhaust divider plate (20./2.4 with the mounts won’t swap to 2.5 block), etc. I believe it has been done before but I don’t have photographic evidence!

If you are wanting to stay carbs ? Promax are fuel injection. Also if you can find a 2.5 200 ff block , Is very close to promax, share alot of the same porting. Also will come out cheaper with ff block 200 , and they run good with carbs ,, many options for you

A 2.4 200 front half and carbs would be a bolt on. You’ll have to find a 200 latch for your cowl and trim out the front of the clamshells behind the face plate. You could do reeds and reed spacers from Chris Carson at the same time.
If your heads are already cut you will then have about the extent of bolt on 2.4 stuff.
I’m not sure what tuner you have. If it isn’t the same one as the 2.4 200 you could get one of those or a Bob’s...
Or just go 2.5!Josh Peterson

sorry i'm just beginning to become familiar with all this information, what does the ff stand for? and if that's what would work best with many options, what years are the 2.5 ff blocks i'd be looking for?

I believe ff blocks are mid to late90s , ff doesn't stand for anything that I know of ? They have same porting as a promax, minus rodslots opened up,and exhaust exit at bottom of the block, and 7 pedal front, ff is just the strongest of the 200s I believe, you can do efi or carbs I have a ff that I'll b running carbs on ,cause I'm not a efi kinda guy,, only reason I say ff block for you if your wanting carbs, I'd hate see a good promax be tore down to Install carbs, also it wouldn't b a 225 anymore I wouldn't think.

Well it actually would be a 225 cause I think PM is round 240hp, but I think carbs would make it lose few hp, maybe not, someone can chime in on that for me
