    '87 XR 2: Surging/Hunting @ Cruising Speed

My XR 2 is not running well. At a steady, on-plane cruise, it hunts and surges BADLY. At WOT it runs great. What could the problem be? If I replace plugs, water separating fuel filter, in-line engine filter, and it still does this, what then? The part that causes me to scratch my head is the fact that it runs great at WOT. If it wouldn't reach there, or died when I hammered the throttle, I'd expect anything fuel related, but this? The only mod done to it is that it has CCMS reeds. Curious.

Just a suggestion but if you still have the idle stabilizers still wired in they could be messing with the timing.

One of my 3.0 EFI motors started doing this. Had 2 broken reeds....They were carbon fiber. Replaced them with C Carsons sport reeds. Fixed it.

I sure hope that's not it because the reeds are C Carsons reeds and they have barely any run time on them. I don't rev. my motor past the factory red line (6000 rpm).
