Here's my cylinder head. It's a bit different. The factory sender uses the lower boss and there is no tapped hole for a sensor bracket on top.

What's this recessed hole filled with wire all about?

Those wires in the hole must transfer heat.

Do you know where to find the PN's for the sensor and the mounting bracket? The only one I see on the mercruiserparts.com diagram is the factory sensor.

At the bottom, it looks to be packed with heavy strand wire like what you'd see in a battery cable. If you look closely at the pic I posted, you can see it.

I think this is the sensor...

Still can't find the mounting bracket, though.

Inside of heads. Think you just see casting in bottom of hole. Also pic of tan wire coming off back of my starboard head.

That is what my heads look like. I will have to drill and tap a hole to put the screw in to hold the sensor in place.

Thanks for the part numbers. I will order those on Monday.

Sent me this photo of his powerhead with the sensor installed on the port head.

    Thanks for all your help

Gaffrig Temp Gauge with a 2001 Merc 300X!!

I ordered the parts from my local dealer but the sensors are out of stock, due in next week. Having said that, does it matter which head I install them on? Most of them seem to be installed on the port head. I have to drill and tap a hole for the screw for the retaining clip to hold the sensor in place on either head, so it makes no difference to me. Any thoughts.
    Thanks
    Gary

Finally tackled this project last weekend and ran each engine on the hose tonight to test. They work! I found the gauges were already connected to the tan wires in the Mercury harnesses, but those wires were never connected to anything. I wonder why Spectre let it leave the factory like that.Click image for larger version.

I installed mine last month just before I winterized the motors. I just had to drill the hole for the retainer bolt and connect the wire to harness on the motor and ran it on the hose. It worked perfect. Now come on spring!!
    Thanks

Great work and help from members - i wonder if that head analog temp probe hole was just lost foam cast markings . I have never seen what the foam looks like but the honeycomb design sure looks like it was just that.
