Stringer to transome repair
My new to me boat had a chit repair job done that i did not notice tell a week ago when i decided to remove the carpet. What i found was a mound of cracked resin over wads of dry matt. The other stringer is rock solid with no repair. Here is where i am with it now after hours of grinding/sanding.What is my best plan of attack to get this solid again ?

One layer of 1200 or 1700 bi-axial glass if using epoxy resin just around the base. After that sets up, sand the edges smooth. Then using bigger and bigger pieces just keep building it up. Maybe 4-5 layers in total.

Sweet, just so happens i have that material in stock from sealing the seam.I wasn't sure if the void/gap between the stringer and transom should be filled with something else.As always, huge thanks for you time and insanely fast responses XtreamVking.

If you have a gap, make some putty from resin and some fumed silica (peanut butter) and fill it. It will help to make it stronger.

I have a few small areas where i sanded to the wood, maybe the size of a quarter. Will it be ok using only epoxy ? I only picked up west system epoxy, biaxial and some matt glass.

Wet it out good before glassing. The exposed wood will suck up some resin. But not really a problem....

No prob, ask away. The more you do it, the more confident you get. Main thing is to be neat while working and have an idea of what you want to end up with before you start. Think about glass thickness and area of contact. Both increase the strength of the repair.

Oh boy,you said ask away ! Now your in for it : ).But seriously,i do have to other things i need 2 wrap my head around before i start tonight. What's best for filling in the transome holes ? And i need to install a set of knees if i go with the manuel jackplate. Can you give me a run down on what material to use, what a good size for them to be and installation. That would be a life saver.

Knees.... Need to be stout You can use ply since you have a wood trans, or you can go with some coosa core board. They should go from the floor up to the transom top. (Square shaped knee you can glass to the deck underside also.) A triangular knee will do the job well. Just glassed to transom and floor. Placement is best just to the outside of the motor mounting bolts. But they can be placed outboard further if a gas tank is installed in the center. Use 3/4'' thick material (wood or coosa). Glass over them out of the boat with a couple of layers of 1700. Then bed them in putty and tab in with progressively bigger tabs of 1700. At least a couple, and more is better. Mat is good to cover the bi axial glass edges to make them smoother and blend in better. Bolt holes can be filled with 1/2'' wood dowel rod and epoxy putty. Make the dowel short of the surface by 1/4'' and coat with epoxy, insert then fill in hole up to the surface. Sand the glass/gell around the holes some 1st, and clean out the holes of sealant. Twistd is doing a 13' bullet build and has good pics of his knees. In the glass forum.

3/4'' ext ply is good enough. Get some good stuff, not roofing sheathing. Lowes has a good selection. Just make sure it is dried out real good. Round off the edges where it's not contacting something. (easier to glass) You can double it up for 1,1/2'' thickness with putty or a layer of glass between for more beef. Not sure it's needed if you use plenty of glass and spread the contact area out using just one thickness. More knees would increase strength exponentially. If you have room for them. Plan on some drain holes at the back of the knees for drainage. They must be sealed, glassed and waterproof ....

That's why is asked.Home Depot had some junk looking sheets...But Lowe's looked decent.I can get marine grade if i wait tell monday and take a road trip.I feel much better going this route instead of having that class 4 100lb hitch that was bolted through the stringers and that pry bar 17" jack plate.....Which amazes me it has lasted since 1989.I was planning on 2 large knees outside the new bolt holes and 2 or 4 smaller ones at the stringers where i am repairing the holes. On the knees, should the glass wrap around all the wood ? Or should the mating surfice be ply ?
