Starting a motor that has been stored for 9 years

Looking for advice from Mercury Mechanics.

I have a 1993 Mariner 175 Magnum EFI that was a great running motor when I stored it 9 years ago (didn't intend for it to sit so long but things happen). I bought a 1993 Gambler Intimidator with a blown 200 on it and I think this will be a fitting motor while I decide what to do for permanent power.

Before storing, the fuel was treated with Ethanol Remover, Fuel Stabilizer, 25:1 +/- with Pennzoil Full Synthetic and I ran it until it fouled and wouldn't start again. Then I removed the plugs, oiled the cylinders and turned it over 4 or 5 revolutions. Also, I always ran Full Syn and high quality fuel.

    1. I plan on taking my injectors to be cleaned and flowed at Boost Labs in Tampa as they are within minutes of me and I hear good things about them.

    2. I'm going to test the fuel pump and hopefully it works as I hear they don't like to sit.

    3. Replace all hoses.

    4. Water Pump and Gear Oil Change.

    5. New Plugs and Plug Wires.

    6. Hopefully it fires up and I can get good compression and leak down readings and let it rip. Compression was good and within 2% across all cylinders before I stored it but never did a leak down on it.

Am I missing anything else? I really don't want to grenade a motor that never let me down once in 16 years. Any advice is appreciated.

If it's a salt motor I would check the thermostats and poppet valve and replace as needed.

Thanks for the reply. It's a fresh water only motor and the thermostats have been gutted with the restrictor portion left in place to slow water flow forever because our hydrilla in Florida clogs them. I'll check the poppet valve though!

I also want to add that the Oil Injection system has been deleted.

Sounds like you got everything covered, I'd squirt some oil in the cyls. before you spin it over and once you get it running, pull the hose off the top bearing to make sure the check valve didn't stick, it should have a pulse/squirt of oil coming out

Thanks Buzzin Dozen. I've deleted the oil injection. I'm assuming that hose is part of the injection system?

I have never messed with oil injection motors but I still think they have the check valve "sump", due to gravity the oil naturally wants to puddle at the bottom of the motor and starve the top bearing, if you look at your motor you will see a hose that comes from the bottom of the front of the crankcase and goes up to the top under the flywheel

Bleed lines have check valves in the block side , isn't part of the injection system top and bottom hoses feed mains on the crank , if they r stuck ,it won't oil bearings proper

Thanks guys. I'll look at the check valves. Also have a friend that is going to look it over for me after I get it to where I believe it's ready to run again. Your help is appreciated and any other suggestions will be heeded.

Good battery and look over the wires for corrosion or critter damage. Check the.cowl for clogs like mud dauber nest.

Spent months on an ‘88 50hp just thinking it was tired. Pulled the plate in the cowl to find a frisbee sized paper wasp nest. Reproped it and everything.

As others have said you got the basics covered. Stator could be in question since it sat up and may not last too long. I would do the things on your list and go from there.

    Rebuild the fuel lift pump.

Thanks for all the advice. Got it all back together, primed the fuel system and it lit up like the day I bought in in '93. Runs great! A couple of laps around the small lake close to home, letting it sit this week, check for any fuel seepage, etc. Install all new gauges and I'll be on the lake playing with the jack plate and props on the Intimidator. Happy Camper here. Thanks Scream and Fly Members for your advice.
