I just got in my last five 300xs motors and ordered the 300R because I knew I would have to start getting them soon anyway. At least this way, I can let my customers know the difference.

40 % more torque at 2000 rpm than a 300XS !! Gonna be interesting to see how it’s propped, can’t wait to see them show up on the mid size cats !!

I wonder how the torque curve compares with a verado tower of power?

So if I spend $4,000 more on an R over an XS, I save the $20 on the four additional PVS holes when I buy a new prop..... seems legit. LMAO

I read an interesting article about why they went to a v8 compared to V6. It was easier to meet emissions just upping the displacement than to go higher hp and lighter V6 . At any rate only a 7 lb penalty with broader torque curve is still going to be a good thing for most bigger boats. In the discussion around the logic other than emissions there was a comment saying Mercury is gaining speed buy making engines that go faster chasing larger and larger propellers as the displacement and weight go up. Its much harder to make an engine lighter with less displacement and higher rpm meet emissions targets. I doubt very much that the new 300R is faster at all over a 300xs with DPR mods done to it with the same pitch prop? Stock to stock with a larger dia prop then yes a little im sure. I guess hence that was were the discussion about making motors for larger pitch props comes in to meet emissions easier. I think the ultimate comparison would be to take a 21 Liberator with a 32pitch prop and test each engine with the same 32 pitch prop on the same boat. As im sure, Randy as everyone suggested will have that data shortly.

That brings me to the unicorn of the bunch. The Caldwell motor. Im guessing but with a smaller pitch prop the basic Caldwell motor would out perform all of them on a 21ft Liberator? Apples to oranges yes. But it would validate the discussion on mercury taking the easier rout with displacement over making lighter higher rpm motors with the same power to meet emissions. At any rate the v8 300R is still impressive dont get me wrong I love the fact there doing what there doing. But at the same time I hate the fact that they are also slow but sure killing the smaller high performance boat market. The days were you can have a 100 mph boat with a brand new motor on that fits in a reg sized garage are numbered or at least the variety of boats you can pick from.

To compare the 300r and 300xs, you need 2" more pitch on the 300R due to the lower gear. I will test 32's and 34's on the new motor. I know 8-10 people with DBR mods, and not a single one even gained 1 mph. That's just what I've been told. I did have a pair of DBR modded 300xs motors and they ran the exact same speed as stock motors.

Do we know if Mercury stuck with the 3 L and Verado style gear case on these or did they go to a whole new design for mounting and spines?

I'm not an outboard expert but I'm curious, what was the weight of a reliable (not race tuned hand grenade) outboard that you would put on that small, garage sized 100 mph boat? I'm talking about a motor where basically you performed scheduled maintenance and ran it for years. Not one where it won't idle below 1000 rpm, can't be shifted when running, required 91+ octane or race gas or needed a rebuild every 50 hours?

Not trying to be a smart a**, I'm truly curious.

So yes, both of those are lighter though not a whole lot more. And in reality those motors have been out of the catalog for a while so this ship has literally sailed a long time ago.
