I would love to know as well. At 14.5” it’s a little small. Maybe they will make a promax XL at 15 or 15.25” for this motor

It could be small but the other 14.5’s they’ve tried are overhub so they are getting too much ventilation. I’m not saying it would be the fastest but if it can stay hooked up and come in under 10% slip it’s a very cost effective option. No one is going to have only one prop if you’re serious about go fast boats but it’s good to have a reliable, easy to drive everyday prop that won’t break the bank and perform well in the 60-80 mph range where you run 95% of the time.

I agree, mark. Pro max has exaggerated progressive rake that I think improves grip. It was my best performing 4 blade on the hdsm.

When you have a TON of tq, you want it hooked solid up with small slip #'s. Herring might be the ticket from the info referenced above.

You are correct. It will be a non realistic very low number. That number has no bearing on the actual fuel mileage of this or any motor testing several props wot.

I am more convinced then ever that the new cases are needing a 5 blade with a min. of 15" dia. and most likely a 15.250. The merc. cnc that we ran yesterday is a 34 X 15.250 with 15 degrees of rake. I hope there is a chance that I am wrong as just spent a bunch of money with Jim Herring having a set of 37 X 15 four blade over hubs made-if not they will work on the 3L cases. Jim is also building me a set of 15 X 35 five blade overhubs with a 14 degree rake and Dave DeWald is building a set of 35 X 15.25 5 blade overhubs with 12 degrees of rake. With all of these in hand, we should have enough to get a pretty good base line on the DW28 with 300Rs-now imagine another 75 hp and another 400 rpm added into the picture

The motor took the 21 liberator to 6300 with 20 lbs. of water pressure. I think that with perfect water and bringing the motor up another 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch we can pull a 107 or 108 pass out of it this particular boat. We are at 9 percent slip which has been pretty typical for Randy and the 21 ones over the past 15 years.

On the fuel usage issue, we have used 35 gallons so far with run time of around 8 hours (the majority of this was cruising 40 to 80) waiting for the break in handcuffs to be released...my guess is that it is going to be close to what guys are used to with an XS and maybe a little more but who cares when you run swamp fuel that is available everywhere...

Would like to seen one of these in the hands of Jon Wright on the back of a Pugh hydro with 450 hp shot of nitrous........don't ever think he wouldn't have tried some crazy chit He was going to run an all aluminum Richard Childress Chebby motor standing on end at one time. Dam I miss him. He would be eating this testing stuff up.. Good job on keeping all of us motor heads informed guys. You done good.

Interesting, I would have thought there was more rake on the CNC. That means there should be other prop options out there to be found that are affordable. Thanks for the info.

If I’m not mistaken you have only run one thru hub which happened to be a 5 blade, there are a bunch of high performance thru hub 4 blades that need to be tried before you can form a solid conclusion IMHO. I know I have a Pro ET and an identical ProMax and although the Pro ET runs great, the ProMax pulls harder in the midrange and runs a better slip number across the board. It’s probably as close as you can get to comparing overhub vs. thru hub. Then again my boat hated the Drag 4 and wasn’t fond of the blaster either so it’s obvious it runs different than a Liberator.

You are mistaken, we tried several thru hub 4 blades (b-blades, hering, hydromotive of mine and Randy's merc. propellers). It took all of them to 6400 and slip numbers were all high. Grant has played with tons of stuff looking for a less expensive option that will last on the 400R and they either slip or throw a blade (not sure if its in the power delivery harmonics of just the 6 cylinder or if these might do the same). I think every boat will be different but the consensus on the twin engine cats is that it takes Hering, Merc. or Dewald 5 blade overhubs to please the 5.44 case.

Also remember that Brent had one of the first 400R motors and put it on his LCB. We tried everything that worked with the 3L case and none of it performed on that boat. Unfortunately, his frustration took a drivers seat on that rig and he pulled the 400 and went back to his X. It will be interesting to see how Errol and Troy end up now that we have the torque on hand with the 300R and better propeller options then what Brent was able to come up with at the time.
