At the end of day not sure why everyone keeps hoping for some secret power from this motor. It is a 300hp motor. Not a 350hp or 400r. Mercury has those motors in the line up too.
They actual HP needs to be within 10 percent of the rated power by law. Dave Bush ran a dyno on the 300xs and power was 305hp. 300x motors have ranged from 305-320 claims or so.
This motor is what it is. Nice features, DTS, Quiet, No Smoke, A bit more low end torque that are a plus.
Weight is close but slightly more. Motor has much larger gearcase and 1.75 gear. In the end I expect the speeds will be real close to the same for this model. Now who knows maybe Mercury offers a 350hp version V8 with another set of cams etc but that will be more money and another conversation for another day. Is it worth $5k more than a 300xs IMO no. But Mercury has made their decision and the unfortunate part is that their focus is not on small HP boats. These engines were designed and built for the mass market of the CC. End of story. For those lucky enough to have old smokers like the 300x you have nothing to fear!

How can you be certain of anything about the new 300r? the motors just came out have been tested on less than a handful of boats(that we have seen). Sky is the limit IMO but we just have to wait and see what mercury produces

Wildman, what's the gph usage at wot on that motor? If it's been covered earlier I missed it.

I asked the question when I was in Wisconsin and I was told absolutely not. Dave added a vent to running surface in the mold and I think that things have changed there. It was pouring rain for a large part of the day, the temp was 94 and the motor was just off of break in by a half hour so it had some cards stacked against it. The temp and humidity definitely plays a role on the X and XS motors. The other thing that we never tried was running the motor without the cowl. The V8 is really bundled up tight for water prevention and noise reduction.

I will be the first to admit that I have not seen a 4 stroke (on a single application) that can run with the X on my STV or LCB but they are coming and the the 300R has way more torque on tap then anything that I own.

That is the truth. I have a f26 twin 300x boat. Even with 26p props that don't load the motors I seen a 5mph difference from good air to bad. And that was only 2 days apart. Not summer fall comparison.

I am not saying it does not have torque or trying to knock it. Only stating that I would be willing to be a lot of money the actual HP is right in line with 300xs +- a few percent. Yes the motors may accelerate great but in the end Joe you know MPH= HP VS LBS in boating. And you also know the drag on that gear case is higher than the old 3L cases. That is a fact that was proven years ago when Mercury switched to that size case on the 300 verados. Most everyone lost 3mph on all the fishing boats.
Again there is no doubt 4 strokes are here to stay and the way of the future. Only thing is some boats may never run as good as they once did unless they make a motor for a specific application instead of for the masses.

I read somewhere that the case is designed to run really high and have less drag than a 3L sportmaster when properly set up. Seems the boat is already 2 mph faster than the 300xs setup from the initial report. The 300 Verado boats slowed down with the bigger cases cause they are being pushed through the water. That is not the case here. Only thing here is the need to run a bigger prop because of the bigger case.

But as these motors start to get mounted on more boats, we will know more

Per the set up guys at Mercury Racing, this motor and case has been faster on every application that they have compared with the XS "a couple from power and a few from set up". They do however have an unbelievable amount of knowledge and parts to draw from. I am obviously very stoked about these motors for my DW28 project. The strong rumor is that a taller gear is coming soon. That along with a tune should be more then I will ever need. Looking forward....

How much extra can you really get with a tune on a n.a. motor with out making other changes. I would imagine it's like any other tuner for a gas automobile motor. Like 15-20 on a 400 hp motor. Big tuning gains happen with forced induction.
