16" mid would be pretty sweet for sure.

Keep it up. Seems the prop guys need to get to work.

Awesome results. I had a good feeling it would be faster than the 300xs. The need for 5 and 6 blade props makes sense. Hopefully we see Mercury racing come out with more props now that this big diameter sportmaster will be used on all the models. Sounds like the motor is a winner just from the first couple of runs. Keep us posted

They have what it takes power and torque wise, now we just need to make blade efficiency and set up translate into mph. Grant has told me several times now that I need to get rid of any propellers that don't have at least five blades on them but I am hesitant with the small single engine boats because I have experienced the "paddle wheel" effect and it not very good for the blood pressure.

Everyone needs to also realize that this was the worst possible conditions that we ran this thing in (94 degrees, 100% humidity, and the motor is brand new) so things will only get better from here.

Multi Blade props are where it's at. Unfortunately what will probably work well will not cheap. Dave Dewald has been working on a new line of propellers as well as what he does with the X Cat boats overseas. I run Dewald 5 Blades on my Skater and for what it worth to date at least on Jim's boat my 32 Dewalds were faster and more efficient than the 32" over the club big money mercury cleavers. The mercs provided better cruise speed and got on plane faster but in the end were 3-4mph slower. As far the comments on lower water pick ups touching that motor or gearcase will void any warranty you have. I have researched using my hull pick ups on the 400r's with the same lower unit and it will not be easy like the old 3L cases. Just like the larger OB cats it will take some time for the prop guys to figure out what the single engine boats need. Now all you guys need to go out and order some 300r's!

You can rest assured that Mercury is working directly with manufacturers and OEMs on setup. I'm sure they will find this information interesting but manufacturers and OEM's are their primary focus.

Everything being said here would indicate the 300R having more actual hp than any other "300" on the market. If a 300XS has let's say 320 hp. By comparison, this motor is pushing 345+hp. Nothing wrong with that. It's great actually.

I think the dbr dyno of the 300xs was showing more like 310. My math says the 300r is 322-329.

That puts it almost directly in line with the 300X (minus a few hundred RPM though and no 1.62 yet)

Engineer Mike - did you assume HP proportional to velocity squared? In this situation I would want to correct for the increased drag of the bigger case. But I don't know how.

Looks like it is speculated that could end up being 8-10 mph faster than a 300XS. How many more hp to go that much faster when put into the gizmo and calculated?

That motor will not be 8-10 mph faster than a 300xs.
The 400r is only about 10-12 mph faster.
300xs is 305hp stock. Not trying to knock the engine, it is a very nice motor. But it is still a 300 not a 350 or 400.

I don't think it will be more than a couple mph faster than a 300XS when Wildman and support team are all done with it. That case is big and I bet the skeg itself is bigger than a 300XS. Not down on the 300R, it will be interesting to see.

Yes, velocity squared. Technically, it should be cubed but in boats the wetted area reduces as speed increases so it's not as steep of increase as it would be for a car (or submarine).

I didn't account for the larger gearcase. However, I THINK the water pickup on the hd sportmaster is lower and further back, allowing higher running height that 3.0 sm.

They have been great to deal with. This set up isn't any different then the 400R except this motor has the torque down low to be a great single engine application. I have not seen a 400R work without a five blade either.
