    TUFF n' UFF ?

    TUFF 21 #00.1
I thought I do a little writeup about my new boat that I bought last fall.
    Here’s the story behind it:

After searching for a while for something that could handle the chop better than my hydrostream and yet still run fast I gave up on trying to find a decent (21 cougar mtr, talon 22 etc). I had a deal fall through on a 22 progression and there was nothing else around for sale it seemed. I had always liked the idea of a 21 SOB but good ones aren't plentiful in ontario, then i came across this boat from a local performance shop (TopGun Marine), it was tucked away in their storage barn with a few other hi-po boats. I was told it was built by Mark Weigel, owner of TUFF boats. The seats said, “TUFF N’ UFF” but the hull had decals that said, “Prelude 21”. I called TUFF and spoke to the owner/founder Mark; who instantly knew what boat I was talking about. He said he personally built the boat back in ’02, that the hull was originally a Canadian splash of a 21’ Challenger called a “Scorpion” that they had bought at an auction and used as the shell to build their first 21 prototype. Anyways he said the boat was totally redone and
built to last with no expense spared, he had seen it a few years back and it still looked good and that I shouldn’t have any concerns about it. I went ahead and made a deal on it and got a ’09 300xs dropped on it complete with a sporty w/ 1.62 gears. I tossed on a 26x13.5” Trophy I had laying around and hit the lake the next day. Boat ran 80 MPH, but clearly needed some setup work as it wouldn’t carry the bow above 70 MPH and would porous down the lake with a big rooster tail.
The boat has Digital/GPS gauges, 6” Detwiler Jackplate, SeaStar Pro hydraulic steering, Hotfoot ect.

Here is a photo from the early 90's, back when the Weigel's were into racing, not building boats. You'll see in the coming photos how mine shares the colours of their race boat as tribute.

Sounds like a really nice ride. Can you post some photos?

Careful using that "splash" word around here. Some people may get offended. LOL
That's a nice looking boat. I always liked those 21fts.

The next week after cleaning the boat I noticed the decals on the side were starting to show some wear. Upon closer inspection I could see that there was something underneath this "Prelude 21" decal. I borrowed the wife’s hair dryer, grabbed a razor blade and ever so carefully when to work on removing the decal…

Now that I knew what I had... I spend countless hours on this forum (who hasn't) trying to find out as much as I could about its history. I was able to come across these old photos from 2002.

Here is it and its sister boat featured at the (2002 or 2003) Toronto Boat show.

Last into the season last year, on about the 3rd time out and after adding 4" more setback and borrowing a 28" RE3 I was able to get the boat to run 90 MPH. I spoke to Mark @ TUFF again who seemed impressed with the speed stating that no one had ever got the boat to run that fast. I asked about the "Prelude 21" decal and why it had it, the story goes that once they did their own version and started selling the new boats under the namesake "TUFF 21" they didn't need this boat anymore and sold it - but before they did they slapped this decal on the side as it technically is the "prelude" to the newer boat design and didn't want any confusion between it and what they had started offering the public for sale. We talked props and setup and he offered for me to come meet up with his crew when I have a free weekend and go run with the new TUFFs in Muskoka. He seems like a really nice guy - Mark I hope I'm telling the story of this boat correctly!

So, this year I've added a Merc Mobile Vessel View to the boat as the 80 MPH GPS speedo has long since been exceeded. I've also got some new props and had some great success. First of all in the rough the boat devours waves, huge waves.... waves that would have broken my Hydrostream in 2 without question. Secondly in the calm, with a 28" Bravo 1 XS the boat has run a best of 92 MPH, with a 29" Promax the boat has run 95 before I ran out of lake/nerves.

Here are some pics of it this summer, other than the 300xs and 4" of extra setback its just as it was when it was built.

I remember that boat at the Boat Show way back then. It's cool to see it back on the water with good power.
