We can just imagine first Karl Kiekhaefer and then the Japanese look at what OMC was up to over the years and say:

used to pick up ralph e. at the smaller detroit "city" airport every summer at his plane & we would talk about this & that, on the plane, while eating peanuts & a ginger-ale, and then take him to the chanticleer that was being provisioned near by. even though I was a younger man then, he didn't come across to me as the sharpest knife in the drawer. that's just me.

Remember too, most of that development was done before anyone else had.

How do you know what would work when it hadn’t been done before?
Look at all the firsts from OMC and Merc.

    What have the japs done??
Oh that’s right, same as they did the US auto market.
My favorite is still in the ‘80’s when they started making V twin jap bikes to steal market from Harley.
Lighter, faster, cheaper, more reliable etc, etc.
    Their engineering department was brilliant.

    Marketing?
    Not so much
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Well coming from the dark side of outboards, Never had much use for the Overwieght Marine Cows (OMC) other than at times as a mechanic, it was job security. But I think that it is threads like this that make this site, history from those that know, who have been there or done that is priceless IMO. thank you FUJIMO for putting this together, with the video links.

not that I am a fan but
Japs did full shift LH gearboxes first
Japs did thin stackable control boxes first
Japs were smart enough to sell prop rated engines when Merc and OMC stuck in the past, that gave them a huge leg up
Japs continued with Jet skis when Merc and OMC said they will go away so no market
Japs make Camrys and nobody in the USA can work out why they sell so well worldwide

looks like its management issue not an engineering issue?

I just sold a early/mid ‘50’s twin OMC w/twin controls that I built OEM, period correct parts so unless the japs did it before that....

I think OMC’s first shifting LH case was ‘87, pretty sure Merc’s at that time was LH/N only, not sure on the japs.

OMC first shifting counter rotating v6 gearcase was in 1980 did not have a reverse. I have never seen one. First oil injection was in Johnson or Evinrude boat with a 88hp sterndrive about 1964 Have seen this. The teriff on an American CAR going to Japan used to be the price of the car the teriff on a most cars coming here is about 3%.

    That’s what I had. ‘50’s vintage.

The one above would be late ‘60’s/early ‘70’s.

I enjoy tinkering w/the old stuff just to see what they were working on back then.
Some of the old 2 banger OMCs had inspection ports in the flywheels do you could adjust the points w/o pulling the flywheel.

My old man used to say you could clean/adjust the points and plugs w/a book of matches.
Tear the striker off the match book to clean them and use a match for a feeler gauge.
Said the matches were normally .035”-ish so maybe not correct but would get you home.
