So the first evinrude snowmobile that we had was a 72' 437 Bobcat twin round headlights (it was their attempt to a light weight). It was an opposing twin with a open velocity stack that faced the riders right side or in my case being so short it grabbed my snowsuit by the chest area and would flood the motor to an instant bog. I remember my dad riding on the back of me the first time or two and thinking that little carb was trying to eat me. The same kid who had the 6 horse outboard (Andy) had an Evinrude "trailblazer" which was nothing short of a wide track work horse. It had a tilt up seat with tons of storage under it so we always made him be the "pack mule" with tow ropes, clothing and extra oil.
Within a couple of years my dad went to Yamahas (oil injection, smooth, quite, and fast)--life was great and I put some serious miles on our first 338 (it was moms sled) and my dad had a 433 GPX . Then I got a new GP 440 and I was king (could keep up with all of the adults on our club rides). Then in 76' came the SRX (total weapon of the day) and I used to ride it only under strict supervision (I think it was my dads favorite toy to this day).
I still have sleds that we keep in the U.P. and ride 5 or 6 times a year (can't get it out of my blood and my boy loves it too.)

Let’s not forget the Aquanaut.
I know people still using them in Fla.

This is an OMC thread, but I never had the pleasure Close, but no cigar.
A McCulloch 4 on a 12' Sea Nymph was my first, in 1968. The local Merc and Evinrude dealers for the lake I grew up on were our neighbors and my buddies, and at 10 years old I was drooling over either a Merc or a Johnrude 6. But Pop went for the "economy" option , and bought a McCulloch.
I still remember: $169 for the boat, $150 for the motor. Truth was, I was just happy to get out there on the water.
The throttle lever was on the front, 360 steering. I sat opposite the way you normally would, because it was easier for me to reach across to the "GO" lever.
In the two seasons I had it, I put hundreds of hours on it, and actually sustained a little bit of left-ear hearing loss as a result of my head being right next to an air-cooled powerhead. My parents never thought about it, and I never would have complained . Oh well, the price you pay growing up in "a simpler time" that everybody talks about...
I fractured the cross-ribs and loosened the rivets in the floor of the Sea Nymph from beating it around in the chop the first season, and it had to be sent back to the factory for warranty repair. My buddy's dad was the distributor at the time, and he couldn't believe it. He wasn't too happy. Even he told my dad, "Prolly shoulda bought a Starcraft!" LOL!Pop kindly rented a boat a couple times while mine was being fixed, just for me to buzz around in for a couple hours. A 14' with an Evinrude 6. That was sooo nice - smooth, quiet, and full gearshift - what a concept! The next season, we traded the 4 on a McCulloch 7.5 trade-in at one of the dealers. That was the year Dad and I built a Minimax.
A quirky POS, the 7.5 developed exasperating ignition problems after about one season, and thoroughly pissed The Old Man off. That was it. One of my pals, of the Mercury dealer family, had a trade-in at his house, a 14' Crestliner with a '70 Merc 7.5. Pop went up and made a deal for the motor. Put it on the Minimax and never looked back. Only Black.
I think we might have thought about an OMC 9.5 later on. I always liked those motors. But they could not run with a 9.8, so that's what went on the Minimax next

Ugh...the 9.5. One of the worst motors ever built. **** starter, **** carburetor, **** engine mounts. That one has been on my do not work on list for over 20 years.

Funny too, I was bashing OMC’s non racing heritage on another thread when I remembered what they did in the mid/late ‘80’s.
Pretty much the end of my kneel down days but was around to see it all.
At the same time you could buy:
J Stock motor
A Stock motor
45SS Stock/OPC motor
60SS OPC motor
SST100 OPC motor
F-1 V-8 OPC motor
Six different Motors/classes all available at same time.
So they did do some good.
BTW, they dominated all those classes.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
