Ok, but none of the waterpump kits show that part included. Found something that might be what you refer to, called inlet water seal kit but not showing for my motor.

    http://greenbayprop.com/fa485914-mer...l-kit-fa485914

Again, thanks for any help, just prefer to do it right but also learn during the process. Lower unit was very easy to drop, thought it was going to be worse. Found that my trim tab is missing, so leaning as I go. I like motorized stuff, and when something catches my eye I buy. Also have a nice 1972 Larson 176 American with the original 85HP Johnson motor on it.

    not even close!

it comes installed in a new housing/kit.. not sold by itself....

look at this housing and you will see a "dark" spot inside top.. that's tha cone shaped washer/grommet...

Not everyone is an expert like you tlwkw, no need to be so rude. I thought forums were for help, especially for the ones that are making genuine efforts Also had a typo, should be tapered not tapped and that I did not notice the inside of the rubber grommet / seal is tapered.

The manual does not call it a washer but a seal, hence confused and wanted to clarify.

I do a lot with old British cars and never bash others, only sometimes lose my patients when a person asking questions cant do a little research first, like asking bolt pattern for Triumph Stag. I dont believe I have done that.

So please rock, bruce, eli, bullet thanks for the help and please feel free to let my know what I might have missed or botched.

problem is ya don't take suggestions very well.. by tellin' someone "I know its not tha water pump" when ya have no clue.. that's wrong on your part and really pissed me off... set tha tone of tha rest of your inquiries ... check my spellin' here too...….!

best I jus bow out at this time and good luck with it and your seloc manual.. I am far from tha expert!.. they will take good care of all your problems.

thanks, but I should be able to question and ask even on the answers, and in the end bottom line , I listed and checked the WP. Still, thanks for your input, love, just slight heavy at times... face to face easier than in written form..... but that is world we live in.

Wow, thought the manual looked ok,but learning as I go. I plan on selling the boat, that is why I bought it, but also like to do it right...

Yes will do, my manual has the same picture, the confusion came when someone stated it is a washer that sat on top of the WP cover. that was wrong andnot a washer and sits in the top of the housing where I put it.

    Ok, another update.

You would not believe it during the first backflush a mad, angry.... Texas snapping turtle came out biting at me......

    Ok next.........

    1. Removed lower unit 5 min.... rubber seal in place correctly sort of hard to mess it up.. but wanted to 2x check
    2. back flushed several ways.... through left and right T Stat housings.... most water came out of the Poppet area -- poppet was removed
    3. Back flush with T Stat covers in place and poppet back on, all water discharged from water inlet
    4. Flush the same but opposite with water inlet side
5.) water through inlet with T covers on and poppet in place, water from tell tale but not POPPET Valve....... not sure if I was able to create enough pressure to cause poppet to open, but still will replace...... although it looks new and fine...

    Comments welcome...

Also I was able to use a hose that worked perfect for both back, front flushing and from poppet... 1978 MGB anti run valve hose. Funking hose but has the right ends.. different sizes.. one fits the garden house the other the water inlet tube. .. hose has perfect bend for connecting to inlet.

First off, Tommy has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about v-6 mercury. You should heed his advice. He was just trying to help, but it seems you want to assume it is something obvious. Being you have no history on this motor, we are trying to start with the most common culprits. When you say washer, do you mean the rubber bushing that slides down the driveshaft on top of the housing after water pump install?

Thanks bullet123, I am sure Tommy knows a lot, but I dont have to sit back and take his snide remarks.. and did follow the advise but not like a sheep , and had questions..... to learn and understand, not merely do......

NOw let us stick to facts... one I followed all advice (but ask questions to learn-) , two I never called it a washer someone else did and that is what threw me off. It is Not called a bushing either, it is rubber seal. Mine goes in the top of WP housing and does and not on the top as others have said.

Lets move on, and constructive comments please about my last test above, mainly from what I was doing should have the poppet value open?
