i think what will be really interesting is if it can be tuned like a Yamaha VMax SHO
Bingo... a 15" 330ish NA on 91 with an 87 switch. Keep the weight and heat down.

Has anyone found out if these are steel sleeve or coated aluminum bores (like SHO)?

I'm assuming Mercury used a plated cylinder. Mercury knows how to do it well.

Looks like it only has the 1.75 gear ratio.....That could be a problem...

    There's talk of 1.62 and maybe (if we're lucky) even a 15"

Lower is a completely new design from what I’ve read.

If the 300R case is surfaced high enough, then they are faster then the smaller 3.0 cases. This info. came from a guy that knows and is very involved in testing and setup. I am going to rig my demo boat with a set of stock X motors if possible before the 300R motors get here so we will have a good comparison.

I can see that a 300R might make the power at a higher rpm, but would that be at the expense of low end torque? Before I spend $20grand+ on a new motor, I want to make sure I am making the right choice.
300 Pro XS isn't pushing the 10% rule like the 200/225/250 models, though you're correct about the the powerband shifting upward slightly with the R's shorter intake runners and different IVC...
    300ProXS makes 296hp@5500 and 313ftlbs@4500
    300R makes 316hp@6250 and 311ftlbs@5000

Did you ever get to run this comparison as I'm curious in the results?

We are very close to having the 300R motors hung on one. Hopefully within 10 days or so we will be running it. There was no need to rig the X motors for comparison, I have witnessed enough of the 300Rs to know that they are faster and better in every way. To rig it with the X's would have required extra holes etc. and I was not interested in doing that on a brand new rig.
