    New Mercury 300 Pro XS V8 vs 300R V8

What is the difference in these 2 motors. I know the R has a stronger clamp bracket. Is the horsepower the same? Do they both have the same warrantee? I read the R is about $1000 to $1500 more. If everything is the same, that is a lot of money for a decal!

I am asking because I am thinking of repowering my 21' Checkmate with a new 4 stroke V8.

They are different. Intake, cams, tuning etc. I have heard that the shorter intake runners in combination with other internals give the R an approx. 10% power increase in many areas of the rpm range.

If a 300ProXS is 10% over 300hp, how can 300R be more powerful? I believe you are only allowed to be 10% over or about 330hp. I can see that a 300R might make the power at a higher rpm, but would that be at the expense of low end torque? Before I spend $20grand+ on a new motor, I want to make sure I am making the right choice.

if one is over by 10% and one under, thats a big gap at WOT
saying that you might still get to the end of the drag strip together depending how long that strip is if one has way more low end?

If you need a sportmaster then you should go with the 300r. Because if you buy a Pro XS, it will be a lot more than $1500 for a sporty after the fact. I would think they both make similar power. The 300r revs a little more; 6400 vs 6200. You can get the 300r with the 3 ram trim, or with the HD forged transom bracket and the single ram trim. The Pro XS is only available with the 3 ram I think. Solid Mounts on the 300r. Both run on 87 octane which is great.

Does anyone know more about the exhaust system? They sound great. I read somewhere where that is able to be modified by the owner. Quiet or Loud.

I always heard that the Pro XS is 10% over. That leaves no room for the R to make more power. If the Pro XS is limited to 6200 rpm and the R has a 6400 rpm governor then I could see the R being faster. I guess we will have to wait and see when people run each motor.

About 5k more than the standard (non pro xs). I priced out a pair of standard and R's for my boat today.

The 250r is comparable to the 250proxs price wise, the 300r I priced was a 20 inch HD mid, sportmaster, and rear tiebar, the 300 standard was black 25 inch mid

Is there any discussion for a 300R with 15" midsection....or perhaps a supercharged version with a 15" mid and a 6800 rev limiter?

I would like to see a 350 hp version. A 350r while still remaining naturally aspirated. The 300r only requires 87 octane. To me that makes it seem like there is some power left for later versions from merc. Although I would hate to buy a 300r now for my lake and bay, only for them to come out with a 350r in a year.

i think what will be really interesting is if it can be tuned like a Yamaha VMax SHO
