Cool The Scream And Fly Member Guitar Thread 2018!

We've had many guitar threads over the years here, so I thought we should begin one for this year.

What are you all playing these days? Playing guitar has always been the very best way for me to wind down or take work breaks. Lately, I've been digging out my old guitar preamps from the 1990s and having some fun with them. Lots of great memories.

This Ibanez RGXXV is my daily player. It sounds fantastic and is so comfortable and easy to play. It looks like a heavy metal guitar but it sounds just as good playing anything. It has Dimarzio pickups which really surprised me - I know they're good but these really work well with this guitar.

My son is going into high school next year and is taking Rock n Roll Academy he already plays an acoustic guitar, what would be a good entry level electric one with amp to get? I already had him learn Sweet Home Alabama

Fender’s Squier starter packs are usually ok. If you don’t have a local guitar tech you trust to set it up, they come tuned up (action height and intonation) if you order from sweetwater. The Strat is fun but I would probably deck the bridge and ditch the whammy bar for a beginner. It will stay in tune better that way...

I’m not familiar with the Epiphone starter kits but the little sg copy is easy to fret chords on but doesn’t have nearly as good a tone as the fenders in my opinion!

The neck on the Squier strats is unfinished and slim, really nice feeling in the hands as long as your paws aren’t too big!

Hard to beat a Strat for a first guitar and nothing wrong with a Squire Strat for a beginner guitar.

If he already is a guitar player and is sticking with it you might consider a Mexican Fender Strat, used. It's easy to make a Mex. Strat sound as good as an American Strat for little money. All you really need is to swap out the pickups and pots with a used loaded American Strat pickguard. A loaded pickguard has all the pickups, switch, potentiometers, knobs and input jack on the pickguard. A very easy swap.

As far as amps, if you don't go with the Squire package, I'd go with a solid stat combo at first. There are a lot of good ones out there. You can find reviews online. Fender, Peavy, Roland, Vox, Crate and more. I wouldn't spend more than 100 bucks on a first time practice amp unless you know he's gonna stick with it. I'd look at reviews online and then buy a good used one off eBay. Tons of used beginner amps on eBay.

But make sure to get a decent guitar, that is very important. A guitar that has bad action, action is string to fretboard string height and angle, that can't be corrected easily will make it hard to play and no fun.
That's what is great about Strats and Tele's it's easy to correct any action issues compared to set neck guitars like Les Paul, SG type guitars. Set neck guitar neck is glued in place.

I've checked out what is out there in small amps these days and here is a list of a few worth looking at I think.

They are modeling amps. They can sound like several different brands/models of amps. Modeling amps are getting real good at sounding like the real thing. I have no personal experience with these amps but I believe they would be a good choice for your son because it would allow him to have a lot of different sounding amps inside one amp. They usually have several effects pedals built into them as well.

    Here are 3 popular ones.

Congrats on the new gear, nice beginners rig. Great to see parents supporting their children's interest. Now starts the long road to acquiring more gear.

Hope your son gets tons of enjoyment out of it. When I first started playing and the fingers started hurting I'd put some super glue on my finger tips until I built up callouses. It helps a little bit.

I've been using Native Instruments plug ins on my PC for awhile now. Fun stuff to play around with and keeps the girlfriend and the cat sane lol. Still nothing like tube amp volume though.

I hear you on the tube sweetness but these new Kemper modeling/profiling amps have me wanting to sell some of my tube amps and get one. IMO the writing is on the wall. It's only a matter of time before modeling amps get so good that tube amps value will drop to penny's on the dollar.

Watch this vid below to see just how good the Kemper amp is.
Then check out the site just below this sentence to listen to the different demos of amp profiles available to load into the Kemper, there are 100's of them.

If you look at the top of the Amp Factory page linked above you will see there are 10 profile packs available.

It depends how fussy you are. To a trained ear/seasoned guitarist there is no comparison. I have a strategy 500 mesa/tri axis rig, and a tweaked dual recto/ a few years ago I bought a a Blackstar 2/12 combo and push it with a tube screamer. The fake stuff is nice and very close with reliability but there is nothing like the real deal when you wind that **** up and it moves your chromosomes around.

Tube vs solid state is kinda like the difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke; you can have fun with a 4 stroke, but without that hint of burnt oil in the air it isn’t REAL!!!
