Posted on THT today:
Dear Mercury Customer:
As you undoubtedly are aware, Mercury Marine introduced its all-new, 3.4L V-6 FourStroke at the 2018 Miami International Boat Show. As we near the summer selling season, the excitement of the new V-6 Mercury outboards – ranging from 175hp through 225hp – remains at a level never seen before in the marine market. With the first shipments scheduled for early May, consumers are anxious to experience these incredible engines.
Mercury is prepared to take that excitement to an even higher level.
Please note that the latest dealer price list includes Mercury’s new, complete offering of FourStroke outboards, and officially introduces a new offering of engines in the 200-300hp range beyond the V-6 FourStrokes introduced at Miami. Our new 4.6L V-8 model offering is available in FourStroke, Verado, Pro XS and SeaPro variants and fulfills our promise to deliver the best marine purpose-built engines in the industry. Detailed information on these new V-8 models will become available to Mercury Boat Builders and Dealers in early May.
Over the next few weeks, Mercury will manufacture current and new products to maximize the quantity of available engines. As such, it will take some time for the new engines to make their way through the supply chain funnel. Therefore, we have delayed the consumer launch of the new 4.6L V-8 FourStroke product until May 18th. Beginning on May 18th, mercurymarine.com will include complete content regarding the new V-8 products. Our desire is to have the new V-8 outboards at many dealerships in preparation of the global launch.
This is the largest introduction of engines in a single year by any engine manufacturer in the marine industry. What a great time to be part of the Mercury family. Hang on, it’s going to be fun!
Sincerely,
Randy Caruana

Weren't the 2.5 260's and 280's more than $15,000 back in the 90's? They certainly were not cheap when they came out, and require a lot of maintenance, and a lot of fuel. I absolutely love this outboard, but I'm the only one in my marina that has one, noone runs these old two-strokes anymore. Everyone gets annoyed every time I start it . Personally, I'm excited to see if Mercury can get a 250-350hp outboard with a good operating rpm range under 550lbs. If these new motors come with a good warranty, and good maintenance schedules, I'll be taking a serious look at them in 2019-2020 once the teething period is over. Even at $20-25k, financing makes that a couple hundred bucks a month... not exactly a huge expenditure in the boating world where everything is expensive. I will miss the smell of premix though.

4.6L V8 300hp, Cadi NorthStar did that 23years ago with the best V8 GM ever made. Must be a higher HP version to come.

If only the threads for the head bolts would have stayed in the block! Impressive engines when running right, but I wouldn’t give them a spot in the “best” list...
Oldsmobile (307-455) and Cadillac (472-500) had the best V8’s in the GM lineup. I would have to pick Olds over Caddy if forced to choose. The late 80’s-early 90’s Caddy 4.9 was pretty impressive too and without the drawbacks of the NorthStar. Starter under the intake plenum? Come on...Josh Peterson
