Cats will be in the boat with the dry sump tank to make the engine lighter.

I sure am glad merc made a lot of 2.0’s over the years. I’ll keep running them as long as I can buy gas, oil, and outrun the game warden! I may have to put the liner back in the can for “stealth mode” one of these days. I still have a few out by the scrap pile I’m not ready to throw away yet!

I just bought a new 150 HO. BRP is two stroke only and emission compliant. Would a Merc 150 4 stroke run with my 150HO, acceleration and top speed?

On the tin fishing boats that I sell...yes...at least the opti vs. 150 4-stroke NA. We don't see much BRP in our area but I think in the 150 class it would be very close on something like your brother's Charger. On your Allison probably not so much but who knows. I'd have an SHO if I could get it in a 15" (and I had a better paying job lol).

Ever wonder where engine development would be today if manufactures were allowed to design what consumers actually wanted?

I'm pretty sure the market determines what is built still. The market wants reliable, long lasting outboards that are quiet and good on fuel. We just don't have the buyers in our market anymore...the PWC really took a big chunk out of the small performance boat market. Take a look around...how many new small performance boat manufacturers are left? The ones that are left are pretty much custom builders...where you order a boat and they build it.

A modern outboard is engineered around what comes out the tailpipe. That's there first and foremost objective. Functionality and all the other things you mentioned are way down the list of design objectives. And there hardly good on fuel, and certainly not long lasting. Or no longer lasting than previous generations of engines. There becoming so over complicated that no sane person would want the risk of owning one that was out of warranty.
Step back and really think how much further along engine tech would be if the EPA hadn't stifled engine development inn favor of tailpipe development.
