    Angry mismatch experts

i read all the self called experts here saying not to buy or build a mismatched front half engine.
then i read about all the mismatching with horned front on promax blocks, 2.4 fronts on 2.5 blocks, etc. etc.
i've run a mismatched horn front for 15 years with no problems.
why do people express opinions with no direct experience?
i see it all the time on several different sites where bad information is given like they know what they're talking about.
i'm fed up with these self promoting internet facebook experts.
anyone giving misleading information should be banned.

Some blocks line up for a fine and some don't. Its something that has to be checked carefully..

I agree you cant just toss on a front half onto any old block and hope it works. That said all the mercs ive owned have been bastard motors with blocks and fronts from whatever. I remove the dowl pins and let the bearing races line up the halfs. Seems to work as ive never had a crank failure yet.

Im actually building a horned promax right now wirh a modded 2.4 front half. Believe me i will be measuring twice on that one before it goes together

Back in the late 70s merc sold a 7 petal horizontal front half as part of a 6 pack conversion kit. So much for the factory line bore and matching halves.

Almost every Merc I built years ago were basket case motors. This block and that front....Your correct, pull the dowel pins and be sure to check crank sealing ring grooves alignment, etc...and go!

They may have possibly just been referencing what the mercury service manual says.

Anytime I have mismatched a block and front half. I’ve always worked down the crank sealing ring grooves to depth of wear by using a tube that’s fit nicely in channel with a piece of 400 grit paper wrapped around it. Do this to prevent any binding on the rings in case of imperfection of mating surfaces. Then put the two together and check depth wear to make wire they are the same and work them accordingly to make a good match. Remove the alignment pins and let the cranks center the two together and make flush on ends.
