I believe if you want to keep the motor in stock form the 225x is better, if you want to mod and go fast the promax is better.

I would buy the best motor I could afford and would not care X or earlier.

I would go with the Promax. The X motor was kinda a bastard short run motor (2 years?) and not that they won’t run well, it’s just that between o ring heads, funky injection, and a Motorola box, parts could be tough to come by. The Promax on the other hand has all the normal 2.4/2.5 stuff and parts are readily available. Just my opinion.

Promax ! Low matinance , reliability , lasts forever , rebuildable , plenty of parts available!

Well guys, I have to toss in a different opinion on this. As a previous owner of the older gen Promax and a current owner of a 225X on my Prosport:
My vote is the X.
The X has a bullet proof oil injection design. Yea, one can remove it from the old style.
The X idles better
The X has better mid-range.
They both have the same top-end power
X has a simpler more reliable ignition system
X has the 60 amp external car type alternator. 40 amp for the older style
X has improved engine guardian protection modes
Parts availability example: The Throttle Position Sensor on the older style is over 500 hundred $
The X's TPS is similar across many Merc models and is under $200 and available.
The X has O-ring heads which is more reliable then gasket design.

How are you judging the gasket head reliability? I’ve never had a gasket related failure on any of my outboards and I’ve had a lot and my dad has also. From the time I was born, till today not a single motor either of us has owned has had a failure related to gasketed head design.
Thats 42 years and counting. Pretty damn reliable in my book.

I've never had a gasket failure either, but i have on a o-ring head, i personally don't like the o-ring style heads i think the o-ring style lets the top of the cylinder move around to much, i know in theory you have the surface of the head contacting the sleeve/holder but i still think it moves around especially if the head isn't dead nuts flat
