My Mercury manual says minimum is around 450 cca (or close to that, going on memory). Possible for less to start but I don’t know if I would rely on it long term.

Took the wife down to the boat..... left keys home ..... 10 miles. Unpluged harness pushed choke few time and 2 pulls cold. Stock 2.5 not a 3517com lbs racer. I wouldn't want to start in gear tho.

I helped a close friend build a 1929 Model T roadster rat rod several years ago. I'm the designated race car, rat rod, street rod, boat etcc wire guy in my area so when it came time for wiring, he handed me a blue tote full of all kinds of goodies. Included was a small motorcycle/ATV looking battery. I do not recall the exact one but it was one you had to put the electrolyte solution in once it was ready for use. If I remember correctly I THINK it was around 300 CCA. I said 'd00d, there's NO way in hell that thing is gonna start this engine, a 1997 Vortec 350 out of a Corvette with 10.2:1 compression. Much to my surprise that little battery not only started it, but it has been starting it for 5 years with 0 problems. He carries a small pocket size jump start box in his tool kit but have never needed it.

With this in mind, I decided this year to jump up my trolling motor from 12v to 24v and the idea of adding an extra ~60-ish pounds kills me. I decided to take the big ole cranking battery out and replace it with a riding mower battery. I always take my jump box with me anyway so worst case scenario is I have to use it to jump the engine after starting and running down the lake or just use one of the trolling batteries but I think the small battery will be fine.

Another idea I have been pondering the last couple years is using capacitors in place of a battery. I have a couple electronic engineering friends that have been using them in such a manner for a couple years, one has actually been running his for almost 5 years. The only time either of the two had a problem was when the vehicle sat for more than 7-8 days without being ran. If I could pull that off then I could be running trolling motor and my 2.5 with a total of about 8 pounds in capacitors. I'm just not ready to risk my new bad a$$ engine on it yet.

I have rigged boats with 300XSs wihich are 3.2 liter optimax motors that need some cranking torque with braille mini AGMs and they work fine as long as there kept in good shape....however once there a few years old they start lacking a little and need to be replaced....funny thing is i had one on my bench in my garage and my neighbor came over and said hey that looks like a harley battery so we went and hooked it up in his harley....lol....
