Better Cooling for a V-4
Just curious if anyone has found a good way to cool down those hot running OMC V-4s of vintage 1969 and up. I wondered about tapping into the top of the block into the water jacket on each side. Any ideas?

tapping into the top of the block..... Shortchanging the cooling......bulging Rubber dirverters block flow causing heating.

I put in a new pump. So even a small line about a 1/8 inch on each side that would give it a small tell tale pee stream is a bad idea? Where are the diverters and pressure relief valves located?

The diverters look like hoses between the cylinders in the water jacket.... as pictured. When they get old or get hot, they will restrict water flow. the picture shows how they should look
The pressure relief valves are in the same housing with the thermostats..... they are located in the exhaust adapter in the rear of the engine below the exhaust plate.... there are two hoses hooked to it, one from the bottom of each head. With the bubbleback engines, it's difficult to get to. #5,6 and 9 are the pressure relief components and # 8 are the thermostats. Picture shows how they are arranged.

BTW, the water pump for the V-6 and V-4 are the same, so the V-4 gets more than enough water............

On the pix of the rubber diverter when they go bad it touches the outer side of block. That blocks flow. Omc made the water go thru all the passeges and the divrs were part of the plan.1/8 steam holes I like.

If the engine is a 69 it uses a different thermostat arrangement and does not have diverters like the later engines.

I've got a 69 that I'm using now which seems a little hotter than I'm used to. I had a 73 that ran warm enough to melt the stator insulation, but not quite overheat. Did the 73 have diverters?

with an old v4 69-72, I would be pulling the powerhead and the adapter and having a good look that it hasnt corroded away somewhere important especially re the 2 water tubes.

The 69-71 V4 let too much water off of the top cylinder. What you need to do is remove the top water cover on the block and if your block is a 69 you will see the slot like the first picture of the white block. They made a change in 72 from the slot to the 1/8" hole to restrict the flow in this area like the picture of the blue block.
I suggest you apply the fix that is shown in the picture of the green block; close the slot with Devcon or Marine Tex and leave 1/8" hole. you can use a piece of brass tubing like the picture of just fill and drill. Your motor will run cooler.
