1995 Mercury 225 Leak from Driveshaft Housing

    I recently purchased a boat with a 1995 Mercury 225 3.0L Carbed version.

It had been sitting for at least 7 years with old gas. The carbs were like molasses.

I cleaned everything up. New carb kits. New impeller kit.

The motor cranks and runs now.

This weekend I took it to a boat ramp and submerged the back end. Let it idle for about 5 minutes. Revved it in neutral a time or 2.

Pulled it back up the boat ramp to inspect and noticed a leak at the bottom of the drive shaft housing on the starboard side. (See pics.)

Looked like the gear oil had mixed with water to create a grayish sludge.

I'm thinking it's probably a seal in the lower unit. So I ordered this gear housing seal kit:

Is there anything else you can think of?

Should I consider replacing anything else?

One more point, the oil pump has been removed and so I'm manually pre-mixing 2 cycle oil in the gas at a ratio of 1:50.

The engine smokes quite a bit at idle.

Is there anything additional I might consider to reduce the smoking?

Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Doubt its gear lube, sat for 7 yrs probably just cleaning all the crap that settled in the mid. Change the gear lube and try it again.

    Thanks for the input Guys!

In addition to the lower gear house seal kit, I'll go ahead and order an upper/lower crank seal kit. And just replace them all while I'm at it. It can't hurt after sitting so long in the HOT Texas summers.

Any additional ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks Bunger! I'll definitely add the power head gasket to my purchase order.

    Really appreciate the advice!
