One of the saddest days in boat racing. RIP Mr Strang

Sorry to say I heard Charlie Strang passed away on 3/12/18

    A legend.

RIP and God Speed Mr Strang.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

This picture is pretty much the image that comes to my mind whenever I hear his name, seems like he wore that smile all the time. No matter what was going on, he always had time for a smile and a 'hello'. I remember attending the APBA meeting in Cincinnati back in around 1973. I bumped into him and his mother Ann as we were leaving the OPC session. He invited me to join them for dinner on one of the riverboat restaurants, I think it was called Mike Finks. I remember Ken and Molly Ballou and some folks from OMC joined us. It was a very enjoyable evening, we talked mostly about our families and travel. I felt quite privileged to be at his table, still feel that way.

Pruett took me to dinner with Charlie and Anne to a really fancy restaurant in Sarasota. He suggested I try the “alligator” as it was a speciality of the house.
Toughest Old piece of meat I ever tried to eat———- Charlie asked me what I thought of it before cracking up ! He said, nobody’s fool enough to order gator meat !

I served on the inaugural Nortn American championship Commission with him and Ann, Bob and Ellie Nordskog, Don and Maureen Lostumbo and Joe and Joy Giambrone.. We spent a week in Mexico City with that group. It was quite an experience. He always took our calls after that and his calm, patient demeanor was very impressive.

Some years later Steve David and I hosted the Offshore Annual Banquet and He attended. I asked him to stand and for the assembled group to acknowledge the inventor of the stern drive....The group erupted in applause and he humbly waved and quickly sat down.

    God Speed Mister Strang.
