We work on alot of state agency boats here. All of them are over powered. I was told that Virginia doesn't enforce it. But God forbid you hurt someone it will be the first thing brought up in the lawsuit.

Just for that reason I won't repower a customers boat over the plate (if it has one).

Cooty, that just may be true for some dumbasses who don't know how to treat a boat, but not everyone.
Or I just got lucky when I bought the only original mint conditioned Stratos 200VT Rocket and matching trailer from the man himself.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

When i was looking to buy a brand new boat and it was rated for max 150 hp but already had a 200hp. The insurance co would not insure that bat and motor combo. And they have all the data on every boat out there and what its rated for. I ended up getting a diffrent boat.

    Am I overpowered? NOPE !!!!

Not if the boat is home-made. You only need a "capacity plate" if you plan on manufacturing the boat and selling it. Then they dunk the boat with weights to find the weight limit... and the HP capacity is just a length x beam x some other magical number the coast guard pulls out of it's arse to come up with a formula. Technically, my 13'4" long by 5'6" wide boat is only rated for an 18hp mota ! ! !

Some might consider this a lil unorthodox. But we just generally go with the 'capacity plate delete' option ...

length x width multiplied by 2. Subtract 90 from that total and that’s the max HP

    17’ long x 6’ wide = 102
    that number x’s =204
    204-90 =114
they allow you to round up to the nearest 5hp so 115hp is the max for a 17’x6’ boat
