Maximum recomended horsepower.
Can you over power your own boat? If not, then how do all these guys get away with race boats? I cant find any law other than the boat cant be provided by the manufacturer that way. It does say "maximum recomended".

20' and above is not rated, however I've over powered my boats for years with no problems except.....if you power with more than the recommendation you may have problems with insurance and if you were involved in an accident things may go South for you, not to mention the Coast Guard or other law enforcement agencies may not like it!
I'd venture to say that most of the Streamers are over powered!WillySteve Hendricks

I really cant find any information on any law regarding this. In the legal text it states Recommended horsepower, not regulated horsepower. I'm asking because I have an 18 foot john boat that I am converting to a catfish rig and I'm gonna put a 90 or 100 horse on it. the boat is plenty big enough for it.

The law varies from state to state. Call your local conservation department.

So does anybody know of any boat racing in Ks? Just read on their website that it is illegal to operate a boat with a motor over its plate rating.
