Block all apart- crank and rods bearing surfaces all look excellent- no stains - no rust- I have not pulled wrist pins- but I expect they will look same as others.
Now where is the water coming from? No visable cracks in water jacket areas- there is a crank in front half but appears to be casting crack.
Crack does not go all the way thur.

Online manual- found factory manual in PDF for $15 - it covers about a dozen or more V6 models for 1997 - https://www.tradebit.com/ 3500 pages in this one download
    They offer all brands.

Look for a corrosion hole near the exhaust ports,or in the inner exhaust plate. Also through the head into the combustion chamber.Look at the mating surfaces of block to powerhead mount plate, and the gasket,Chris

Yep, that’s a nasty crack, but it’s clean,

the top top of the head and sleeves were nasty that’s probably the leak.

    thanks-
If there is a corrosion hole - it is probably tiny- and there are probably more that just have not gone all the way thur yet-
PH to mid gasket destroyed when PH pulled.
    I will search-

I can find nothing that would account for water intrusion-
I have 5 broken bolts- and 2 messed up holes from trying to remove busted off bolts
I thinking it is time to throw in the towel on this one and sell off the parts-

It was sold to me a "good running motor" - ....... my bad I guess - should have run when I saw clean plug-

For sale: crank/ 6 pistons and rods / carbs /intake with reeds/ complete electric system with ECU / 2 new and 2 used fuel pumps / trim & lower unit (broken cavitation plate) and mid section-
it was running - I found plug not hot which is what lead me to dig into it.

For free 1 1997 screwed up block with good compression-

Iirc there should be water around the sleeves, if the cap (part with spark plugs)doesn’t have the gasket in good condition and mate good with the sleeve (cylinder) it will be just like a head gasket leak in a car. That if I remember how that one goes together. Basically you took apart the main part that fails if they leak. If the cap bolts were corroded in that becomes the main suspect. Unless it was a flood hurricane sunk salavage engine. But the rest looks to clean for that.

you probably right- however it is not that bad- lower was no issue at all- PH mounting bolts again no problem - Steering arm no corrosion
I will see what the wisperer has to allow-
This just a project motor - my daily runners have fairly new to new on them.
