Formula 233 may be the most copied? That's a lot of boats coming from that hull. I can see why it was so copied, I spent a lot of time in an early 70's I/O 233 and it was a heckova boat... 1st time I ever "got lucky" was in a 233 cabin.

Lotta boat packed into 23 feet....Huge lifting strakes, rounded keel, hi sides and a very deep V.

Aronow liked the number 69. Why Ben Kramer later had to use/take it...

By later day 24 degree V standards, actually pretty narrow lifting strakes... Great ride in the rough. Needs a bit more pony's to perform, than later evolution Deep-V's. This has always been the appeal to all the Aronow 24 degree hulls. Flattens out rough water. Never stopping to think how slow they were going, by todays standards. Hence the great "wake crushing" ride. Same with all the pleasure boat versions of the big Cigarettes of the 70's, 80's & early 90's...until better technologies were finally applied to building them.

One of the things that never seemed to be changed, of all the 233 Formula copies that everyone made, was the transoms flat surface bumpout. Most were made into outboard models as well. They would all go to the trouble of having custom outboard transom brackets made to accomodate the uneven transom surface. Too lazy to tool a regular transom when the hull was copied.

A couple reasons. The transoms were curved & required a perfectly flat area to install the sterndrives transom plates (or inboard powers external rudders). Another smaller advantage was that the single or twin engine sterndrive package engine covers provided a few more inches of cockpit room, as the engine installation(s) were set back a bit farthur. A side advantage was a much smaller size piece of 1 1/2" transom plywood was needed during lamination.

When they copied the 233 Formula hull for use with outboard brackets, they needed to create a flat full size transom, like this. Most all copy-cats did not do this.
