Richie Sutphen was responsible for the Action Craft flats boats coming to be. The 17' sport pacer was the hull and he had a "flats" boat deck that fit it. He made one boat from it for his dad. And then stored it. It was cool. No one on the west coat of fla had seen anything like it. The orig owners made a deal with him to build the original Action Craft boats out of those molds. So he was responsible for two flats boats that hit it big.

I saw this on THT and I am wondering if the hull that was cut up was that 20 Sutphen.
Copied and Pasted:
The story as I know it. Bobby soles needed a boat to test his ideas on prop tweaking . Bobby's propeller shop In palm beach has been around forever. He chopped up another hull to put together the prototype. It was all deck with a center console pod like the black one above. A mold was pulled off that, and a few Soles boats were made, and modified for the bass tournaments on Lake Okeechobee, which can get rough, is large with lots of open water.
A friend of mine bought a warehouse in west palm beach, and inside was a mold and a hull/deck. He put together a flats boat out of the hull/deck, and sold the mold to a Rick, of Ricks Fiberglas in lake worth, fla. That was in early 90's. By that time, l&b, big O and a few others had splashed Bobby's boat, and away they went. Rick was still building one offs of the boat up to a few years ago.

I would think that the STV type hull would be high on the copy list.

Just outside Montgomery Alabama they were building STV copies , don't believe they sold a whole bunch , Lighting boats also made some copies, poor poor quality.

The STV copies never seemed to do very well due to the purist following that the Summerford brand has had since the early 80s. A history of producing high quality, fast well handling boats will do that!

Lots of Skaters have been copied too, not just in North America.
I’m curious to hear people’s opinions on splashing a boat that is no longer in production or otherwise not readily available ?

The VT hull Shadows were close enough to being STV copies that they supposedly were sued by Summerford.

Allisons copied all over the place-at least the older smaller ones. I raced one, can't remember the brand now. Tow or three companies in Central Florida made 15s and either 13s or 14s (don't recall any more). I heard a great story about Darris suing one company, and when he won driving a Caterpillar over their molds, but a lot of little companies made them in the 70s and 80s.

His name was James. The last ones he built had balsa core and were strong. We bought a yellow one and it`s still up and running with the original core after many owners and motors. Those that had balsa were good boats but not enough to hurt Allison sales.

I read a story on OSO by an old timer who said that in offshore performance there were only 3 or 4, truly original designs. Said everything else were copies.
Fun, I agree on the Tahiti guess.
Pat, I remember reading many stories of Darris Allisons patents on the later designs.
Agreed on the STVs too. Yeah you can buy a Lightning copy for less than an orig but you'll also see that on resale.
I remember tracking my old '85 24' Sonic back to Donzi of about '67
Would explain the handling issues of a 55 mph single I/O, round keel boat at 80 w/twin O/Bs
In Fla if you leave a popular design unattended over night, you'll find mold release wax on it the next morning.Last edited by Instigator; 03-08-2018 at 10:51 AM.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Someone's early computer concoction. A bit off, but nonetheless interesting.
