Top speed shootout
Thinking about putting on a "top speed shootout" at the local Lake "Cherokee Lake" not sure how many people will turn out so I'm going to schedule it for the end of the summer my question is .. how do you think I should separate the classes.... it's not a very big lake so we don't have the huge offshore type boat but there is three pretty good size lakes here in East Tennessee ( Douglas Cherokee and Norris) Im hoping for a good turnout ! I plan on doing a pontoon and a PWC class for fun. Also a bass boat class for a bigger turnout but on this speed boats should I separate the classes by horsepower or number of cylinders or boat length or what's your suggestions ..... I never attended one of these or participated in any I think it would be a lot of fun if some of you guys have experience with them give me some pointers please
Thanks JoshLast edited by 91eagle; 03-04-2018 at 07:54 PM.

You got to be kidding? First you might think of helping out as a volunteer at one and get a little experience at one aspect of what to expect and then you will realize the challenges. Second go by and see your local lake patrol or who ever controls the lake and see what they are going to require to have a event. Third if you get this far is that insurance will kill you.

I sponsored the Illinois River run for about 6 years and overall it was a blast. There are serious issues to deal with. Mine was just a cookout but ya gotta know when you get 50-60 hotrods together there will be racing. Most everyone was very responsible however there will always be exceptions. I tried to monitor things as well as possible but ya can't see everything. Out of the estimated 500-600 people over the course of the years there was only one close call, one accident, and only one time I had to ask anyone to leave due to intoxication. Neither turned out to be a big deal so I was lucky. I considered myself very fortunate that nobody got hurt therefore no legal issues. If you do all this ya gotta know that if someone gets injured you will have some responsibility although I have no clue to what extent. I know I was always nervous when someone made a 120+ pass but we sure had fun.

Thanks for the information guys...I have made close to 100 calls it seems like this week and sent in the applications for the permits I will need I know what stretch of Lake I want to use so I applied for the water event permit .. and narrowed the location down to two places almost right across the lake from each ... I know I'm a little inexperienced and I'm sure this will take up a lot of my time but I'm retired army so I don't have a lot going on.. this is not a plan to make money I plan on giving all proceeds if any to the local EMT and Fire Department but I'm thinking it may end up costing money in the long run but I think it will be worth it they don't have an event like this in the area and I think people will really enjoy it and have a good time.... not knowing what the turnout is going to be is making it hard to plan for how many classes to run.... I applied for the water event permit for August 18th so I have most of the summer to get prepared wish me luck..lol.. when I have all the details worked out ill make sure everyone here knows about the time and place ..so i hope ya join us and come make a pass.... continue to give me pointers as you think of them I'm sure I'll need all the advice I can get ..... if anybody with experience wants to help out a little bit with the planning hit me in the message box and I'll give you my phone number

Well you're off in the right direction.
As one whose done it (search this site for Rumble on the River) I can tell you it's a 100 times more work than you think.
You will end up doing almost everything yourself.
I built a website and had a separate page for volunteers. They pick what they wanted to help with etc.
6 months out I had 6 confirmed volunteers, 2 wks out I had zero.
I busted my ass in 100* heat and 100* humidity while people sat in the shade, drank beer and watched. That was a tough pill to swallow.
All the experts told me I would fail yet offered no help.
Once I understood the attendees were busting their asses, some scheduling their family vacations, some camping in tents, were doing this to play w/their boats and hang out w/friends.
Who wants to go through all that, sweat their balls off all weekend, drive home them go to work Monday exhausted??
No one. Including me.
You will need a rock solid "release from liability" for each entrant to sign.
Most places offering permits will require liability insurance covering them, not you.
Last I was involved I think it was $4500-ish.
We were lucky and had a local "tourism board" offering grants to events putting "heads in beds", as in hotel rooms that paid this fee.
I would like to make what I think is a great comparison between our event and "River Ranch" down in Fla.
The Rumble had organized/scheduled/scored drag races, top speed runs, boat show, etc, etc.
It was huge fun and I have tons of friends from them.
Unfortuately, after several yrs it burned out me and my partner.
River Ranch on the other hand, sets a date (every freagin 6 months or yr!), and leaves everything else wide open.
Its now entering its 97th yr, or something close and shows no sign of slowing down!
If questioned, I would wager both atenees had same amount of fun.
Your military background will help.
Do your homework, make your decisions not questions.
You will not make everyone happy and will drive yourself crazy trying!
Lastly, if you stick w/top end contest make a drivers meeting mandatory. I used peer pressure to keep people in line andit worked great.
You will have a mix of serious, experienced racers and beer drinking partiers out for fun.
I was firm about watching each other.
One screw up will ruin it for every one.
The experienced guys will know this and help keep the BS to a min to help assure a follow up event.
Sorry for the book but is a long/deep one.
Good luck!

Not saying it's definite yet but I'm putting a lot of thought into it ....the local Rescue Squad said they can supply rescue boats for the entire event and the ambulance on site and I've reached out to a few lawyers to get their opinion on a release form as far as liability but appointments are all next week on that ..so ill have to wait and see what they have to say..... Everything you guys are saying makes a lot of sense I know it's a big risk to take and a lot of work but I have looked around for several years to find a event that the average guy on a budget (very tight budget in my case) ... can go out and experience the thrill of competition and know how my project compared to all the other guys in the area.. and I'm sure Across America there's a few events similar to what I'm talkin about that happened ever season. But finances and family if it is not local most guys can't attend.... So.. keep the ideas coming guys positive or negative its all good input. THANKS

I agree with Gater. Make a rule that states NO ALCOHOL consumption by any boat driver racing or not at this event.

Getting your local rescue on board is huge.
Ours worked for T shirts
When you get to to that point, show them the boats and rigging they may have to deal with.
We had some guys strapped in and in capsules. They won't be trained or able to much there.
That puts it on drivers to understand/accept risk.
Bobby, that's why I had the drivers meeting early, and made it mandatory.
The only people to bitch were........, the partiers
Miss the meeting and you're done.Last edited by Instigator; 03-21-2018 at 05:10 AM.
