Exclamation An incredibly interesting outboard motor...

I know very little about this company - as a matter of fact, I never heard of it until recently. I spotted these images of this 1925 Caille "5-Speed" rowboat motor on an Ebay listing (link here).

What I found most interesting about it is that it has a fully-variable pitch propeller - in 1925! It could be articulated to provide a near zero-pitch neutral and even reverse. I'm not exactly sure where the name "5-Speed" originates; I imagine pitch settings on the propeller. It's really intriguing when I see just how simple the pitch mechanism really is.

    Hi!

That propeller system have also been in use in wooden boats in Norway. And I am sure other places too Its like an early version of Kiekhaefer latest project.

And a few years later, Caille was producing one of the very first outboard models made specifically for RACING! During the early 1930's they were one of the top brands in racing holding a few class records and winning many races. Also one of the first outboard companies to sponsor a racer.

Wow thats very similar to how a controllable pitch propeller system works in a ship. Very cool to see on an outboard that old. Does it run constant rpm or can it throttle up and down aswell?
