Battery isolator
I just switched from a 12v trolling motor to a 24v. Obviously I had to buy another deep cycle battery and the added weight has me wanting to remove the cranking battery. Is there a way I could wire my engine to start from one of the trolling batteries so I won't have to use 3 batteries? I have used battery isolators in the mid 80-s through late 90's while doing car audio but only to allow a single alternator to switch charging between multiple batteries. I have used riding mower batteries in several rat rod builds with great success and have thought of trying one of those, it won't eliminate 100% of the weight but going from 60-ish pounds to 5-ish pounds is something I can live with.

I have wired one trolling batt to act as a back up start batt. Will also charge that batt with the motor. I run the pos cable from the troll mtr to #1 batts pos terminal. The neg wire from the troll motor goes to the #2 batts neg terminal. To get the 24v needed, I have a cable going from the un used neg post #1 batt to the pos post on the 2nd batt. I have a switchable breaker on that cable to turn it off and on. You can wire either battery to act as the start batt, (usual pos and neg hook up) but only one.

Yes. Butt make sure the negative on the 12 v is also the negative of the trolling motor and all electrical components.

Blue Sea Systems makes a battery isolator and battery switch kit called the “add a battery kit” that will do just what you want. I used in in my Triad for a start battery and secondary/stereo battery and it worked great. You may also want to look at lighter batteries.

I ran two 12 volts batteries for my 24 volt troller and cranked off one of them for many many years with no issues. Group 27 batteries should handle it unless you fish high current lakes/rivers. I've used group 24 and only ran it low one time. It still started but barely. I've used battery isolaters but didn't see much of a difference. Recently I went all lithium. two 50AH for troller and one 50AH for cranking/pumps/graphs. Great setup.

I have two brand new 29DC deep cycle batteries for trolling motor and a small riding mower battery for my engine. I keep a jump box with me in case I run my cranking battery dead so I am gonna give it a good try then see what I need to change, if anything.
