    Water in 3.0 Sportmaster

My gear oil is a milky white color. I gather it's water in the gearcase. The water never comes out of suspension after being drained and left to sit in the pan. Where are the likely entry points? I thinking driveshaft, propshaft and shift shaft. Is this something I can do at home. I have a Merc gearcase manual but not 100% sure the bearing carrier has to come out to change that seal? Any required tools or parts I would or should need? I'll follow the manual but any good insight is appreciated. Will it kill the gearcase if I run it and change the oil nightly, I want to make the Suwannee river run next month.

Milky lube in a sportmaster, is common but it shouldn,t be. the most common leakage point is seal carrier, below impeller plate. The seals there can drop or migrate, & cause leakage. Whenever you fill sportmaster, you must let 1 or 2 oz. of lube drain out to leave room for expansion & contraction. If it still gains water, it must be press. & vac. checked to find leak. The only real fix is to put a reservoir bottle in boat & have a hose run to l/u like Mercruiser.

I agree 100%. I put both of these items in my 3.0L Sportmaster 10+ years ago and I pressure tested it in the fall when I took the motor off the boat and the case held 15psi for two days and no water in the case. I bought two from Todd last year for 2 other gearcases and I am going to order two more sets for another pair of Sportmasters next week.
    Thanks
    Gary

Took your advise and installed a set from Todd. Fast shipping, easy install. Went about 100 miles averageing 70ish. Drained it finally yesterday and it was as clean as new lube. River Ranch here I come.
