Thanks, appreciate the offer but not much space in the boat and I'd prefer the external pump.

Well, it’s hard for me to believe, but this is the first step in reassembly. Wasn’t sure this would actually happen.

This is the new power trim unit. It’s from a 1997 so it’s a 2-wire instead of the three wire. It took me a while to figure out (from posts) that the polarity of the two wires are just switched for changing the direction up or down. This just didn’t seem right (or intuitive) to not have a fixed ground, but it actually makes testing a bit more convenient. Guess I’ll have to get a harness with the relays instead of using the solenoids that came with the motor.

In any case the question is, on the new trim unit, in the full down position the two smaller rams do not go down. Is it the weight of the engine that would normally cause this to happen? Is this normal behavior for the unit without the engine installed?

Yes, they’ll move with the engine weight. I had mine able to move by hand before, but I was flushing the water out of it when the PO had installed the wrong lift support and it broke my reservoir. I noticed the main ram would go down and force them up. When full of fluid, they were fully extended and tight.

no so... they should move thru tha whole range up and down, power head are not..... tha big one is "tilt only" will not hold motor under any power.. tha trim rods do all tha work.

Tight, but not impossible I should say. Try pushing harder.

That last bit they would kind of freeze up at the top of the cylinder and I could “bop” it with the palm of my hand then push down. Make sure you buy a new cross pin per the manual for installation.

I also thought the 2 small rams do all the trimming from down position up till big ram (tilt) takes over ,but big ram will not raise it under power(past point of 2 small rams)

I think I misunderstood. I thought you were trying to move them by hand in bypass since you didn’t have the solenoids. Reading closer, were you actuating it with the pump motor?

That was hooking the motor to a car battery with jumper cables to test it out going up and down. The two small rods never went in at the full down position. I'll try again giving it a hand. Externally the unit looks great; hard to believe there would be an internal problem, unless a weak motor could behave like that, but the big ram goes up and down fine. Although the fluid may be old, there is plenty of fluid in it.

you should be able ta lay tha unit ona bench and run it thru its paces.. both trim rods and tilt should completely cycle thru, up, down, in, out no mater what if its right... its a "closed system".. it pushes and pulls all three ... only time any weight will come inta play is if weight its "pushing" or "pulling" is to much over its limits...….

Are you talking with the swivel bracket installed? The OP does not have the bracket installed where it contacts the trim rams.

I don’t wanna step on the toes of the experts, since I’m just a “padawan”, but I pulled this from the Merc manual. The last sentence in particular.
