Must be a salt water motor.
I’ve had some so bad used a portable plasma cutter and destroyed the exhaust plate getting the powerhead off.
Does your new mid have the exhaust plate?

Looks like the new mid has just the bottom plate, not the top one. I guess that's better than none.

The last time I did it with the plasma cutter I destroyed the upper plate and saved the lower. Maybe you could get it by destroying the lower plate.
Another option is a thin cut off wheel and cut around the perimeter through the studs and all.
Either way as stuck as it sounds like it is something is going to get damaged

Was thinking of some sort of cutoff wheel, but will think about the sledge too. Explosives sound dangerous to me.

You could tip the motor upside down and then spray the studs with PB blaster and let sit for a bit and spray some more, that way it may run down where it needs to get. I have not seen to many rust penetrates run up hill.

Been held up with other things the last week or so. Hopefully be the end of this weekend I'll see how difficult it will be to get it upside down. My preference would be not to destroy parts if I can get away with it.

Hang it upside down in the stand? Soak it well at all points, let it creep in?

Was wondering how you made out....hanging it or sitting it upside down on flywheel should not hurt or break anything i would think.

One last thing I tried before getting into flipping the motor over was to heat the studs with a propane torch and then impact hammer them again...no luck.

So now I am attempting to flip the motor over… there is not nearly enough height on the stand to turn it in place, so now I’m trying to connect and lift it on a second motor lift from the stand. We’ll see how that goes.

imo ...Flipping it upside down will yield nothing, except maybe breaking something on the power head, and maybe someone get hurt in the process.

I have removed stuck power heads using the 2 short studs in the rear, backing the nuts down and using a wedge there to get leverage and a small separation started.

Then once up a small amount ( just barely a crack 1/16")I used thin chisels to apply pressure and heat applied to the mid where the longer studs are.

I always left the motor on the boat, and had my hoist attached to the power head with a lot of lift on it, and rocked the power head hard. Between the pressure, the heat and the rocking, they all came loose. Yes, sometimes there is collateral damage, but never junked anything a dab of JB weld couldn't fill from the chisels. Thats why the wedges would likely do better than chisels.

The wedges mentioned in the postings below sound better than the chisels I used, but the process is the same and it always worked for me. I used to live in Miami and old saltwater motors was all I ever worked on. ..... Man do I love fresh water motors now !!

Oh, and if your using this in salt water..Do Not use never seize...jmo

Read through this thread, there is some good tips there.
