Do the people in the background look disappointed when they see how ugly the engine is, or is it my imagination?

I guess they also forgot to tell the guy who designed the exterior that Mercurys are black...

they're shocked, yes, but as soon as they found out how light the motor is, the 6,000 WOT RPM, and ease of checking oil level and oil fill,
and one-hot-handle to pull off the 1-piece cowl, they got happier inside.

I kind'a like the new platform....I always look deeper than the surface.

folks, we got ourselves a high torque, 3.4L V6!

and if you're not happy with the lower unit, there are fixes to that

I heard that the warranty is not voided on the lu with this nosecone addition

thanks for posting video. He defiantly said this motor is only designed to replace 2.5 opti and l4 Verado.

Spunds like there is definatly something else coming se coming to replace 250/300

    hope it stays sub 500

Oil weighs 6.8 lbs / gallon so figure about +12 lbs with lower unit and engine oil. Pretty insignificant.

well, I'm with Noli. the jumbo shrimp started off as what, 275 hp??? and now its up to 400 and talk of more to come, I can see them tweaking this thing to more than 225, even the addition of a blower could give it a huge bump up. it's like a carnival ride you've only made it to the second turn and want off of, no turning back. Fun Out

    Guessing...
They are going to come out with a new motor for the 250 and maybe 300 four stroke. If they had wanted to make the 3.4 into a higher hp motor they would have released it now. I imagine a 4 liter at a little more weight. I can only guess that their target is to make it lighter than the SHO 250.
Also I seem to see from the cut out motor that this one uses cast cylinders. No sleeves so the motor is like the SHO now. No rebuilding when it goes bad.

I disagree, getting 250 - 300 hp from a 3.4L NA motor isn’t difficult at all. I think the release of these larger HP versions is much more about market positioning and Mercury refactoring its engine lineup. While I believe it’s fairly obvious the Opti’s day’s are numbered I think the same could be said with the lower HP Verados. Mercury just needs to figure out how to spin it so they don’t alienate too many customers simultaneously.

I say a LARGE stockpile.... That thing sure is one prutttyy piece....

I will say. Unfortunately for us small market of guys Mercury is headed to satisfy what the majority of their clients are requesting from them and most importantly what makes them function in the black. Can not fault them.
I also think in a short time they will have a larger variety of good, light weight decent performer 4 strokes out on the market.
We can see many boat builders realize this is the way of the future so they are building boats to accommodate them.
