I'd start a resurrection thread but after 100+ - gallons of oil the only drama was running out of beer. Other than putting the motor on in the spring and taking it off for storage in the late fall I never took the cowl off.

I can appreciate the effort. But he was so sure, and spoke so matter of fact. The motor was a mess, his porting made it next to impossible to jet. The rest had issues, I hate to see someone give up but that combination had been done a thousand times the 30 years that motor has been around. Same results.

At the very least, a laser set up with a used PCU and the steam wheel, turn the knob until it's just off blubber every 250 rpm and nit pick from there.

I agree but it was fun. Kinda reminded me of the old days before computers and web sites where nobody told you their port secrets nor did ask.
You just learned by trial and error. Sorta like Wilfong did. I guess that's why I enjoyed his thread.
Truth is he could have been more successful with a stock 225pm block and had less trouble jetting. But he wanted to do it his way.

Doing your own porting is cool. Living with the results, sometimes not so much. He is doing his own thing and i'm sure will continue to do so. I wrecked a fairly nice motor doing my own porting on it. 1st porting gained some performance. I thought, more is better? 2nd time around ruined it. Still have the block to remind me not to do that again. Hard to out do momma merc with all the r&d they do on the motors. They build 10 motors all slightly different and then run them. Then choose from the survivors. dwilfong is just doing it 1 at a time. He will get it done, don't seem like a quitter. Very determined guy.

Sorry to see the thread go. He did do a great job restoring the boat. Some good stuff there for someone who hasn't done a restore on a HydroStream.

I have never done much porting on the Mercs I rebuilt, save for some casting clean up and lite port matching. But love reading the ones where guys do.
