Either way it will be spectacular! And such a great waste, IMHO. Wish we could say to Mr. Elon Musk "With all the resources and talent and intelligence available to you, you still persist in sticking a firecracker up your A** and blowing yourself up into orbit. The ancient Chinese tried that -- You can't find a better way ?"
OK, so maybe I do read to much SiFi -------------

Why is it a waste? It's a test flight. A process that has to be done, and whether it's a block of cheese or a couple hundred thousand dollar prototype Tesla, does it really matter? Hell, the most expensive pieces will be all recovered if all goes as planned. The 2 outer boosters have already been to space and are re-uses.
Plan is to land the 2 outer boosters at LZ-1 at the cape, and the center booster will land at sea on the recovery barge. Hopefully, they all stay together, and it gets off the pad. They just got Pad 40 back open and it would really suck for something similar to happen at 39A...2006 Spectre 24' SCS

I am very aware of the mission plan and the amazing technology that was developed to support it. But you are missing the point I was trying to make. Hundreds of years ago we had rockets.
Ancient civilizations developed them for entertainment and to wage war. We have been developing and refining them ever since, but never straying far from the basic concept.
I believe that somewhere in our collective bag of scientific tricks there will be a better way of achieving space flight than sitting on a pile of dynamite and igniting it. The guy behind Space X
and several other amazing endeavors has the ability to pull that trick out of the bag and really lead the way. Hope he breaks free of convention and does it. JMHO.
OH, and thanks for the link, waiting for the show to begin.

Good size rocket , the Saturn V is still king though with over 7.6 million lbs thrust from 5 F1 engines and 310000 lbs payload verses a little over 5.5 million lbs thrust from nine merlin engines and 140000 lbs pay load . The falcon heavy is the most powerful these days but the Saturn V would smoke it .

If I'm correct the Saturn V was fueled by kerosene + oxygen(?)! But we're not getting far out until we find something faster. Warp Drive?

What a bunch of curmudgeons.......
Why can’t you just celebrate the achievement? Twice the payload at 1/4 the price vs. the latest generation of government backed systems. And Starman was litterally the cherry on top, I like their style.Mark

Lets face it - Musk has done more in a few years than any gvt funded project has accomplished since its inception, let alone f-ing dream of - period !!!
You cant land a booster - check
You cant do that twice - check x21 - now 24 btw
You cant re-use a booster- check
You cant make that fly - check
You cant recover boosters simultaneously - check
You cant recover 3 booster a fairing AND put a Tesla in deep orbit with a dummy and camera's to view it - One Big FAT assed- last check .
The haters will always hate - I liken it to the Trump haters -
