I didnt change the reeds expecting it to fix my issue, i replaced them after all the post ive read about them breaking and causing harm to the motor, $125 and a few hours of my time was worth the added insurance.

.031 gap seems too tight. If you touched the center electrode on a iridium tip spark while adjusting the gap you may have damaged it already. 3.0 optis should gap around .040 to .044 . When adjusting the gap only bend the ground strap without touching the center tip. That tip on a iridium plug is very fragile. hf...

Hmm... okay... the service manual i downloaded for my year shows a plug gap of .031” your saying im .010 - .013 less, that would make a bigdifference. i could pull the plugs back out and gap them more. I didnot use the electrode to “pry” the ground open.

No , you need more gap , not less . It has always been easier to me to first try and determine what cylinder it is rather than trouble shoot all six cylinders . There should be a decal on that motor stating the plug gap . Try pulling a coil wire off and make a run , one at a time . When you do one that has little to no difference that is the cylinder to narrow your efforts towards. hf...

I cant read that part of the sticker so i just went online and found the .031. Ill open them up and do the coil/run test to see. I know for sure all 6 fire at idol by un plugging a coil at a time and also a fuel injector at a time. So does it sound like a coil is dropping out at higher rpms?

I played with a couple that had the same issue. Dont forget about the pulse pump. Especially if someone has played or removed it. Fuel/ filter is clean ( dont run a external fuel/ water filter in the boat Mercury says no.) I seen it matter on some and not on others. I faulty TPS is always another very common cause. How does it feel at 5200 rpms??

Compression was tested before i bought the motor. Motor ran on hose for aprox 2 mins or so then i shut it down pulled plugs and did compresstion test. I dont remember what cylinder had what buy i do remember preasure was between 90-97 through all 6.

I pulled apart the puls pump and it looks in good condition. I have another tps i may swap it for good measure. I disconected the linkage to the tps and move it by hand the motor responds. Any one know what the omhs test procedure is for the tps and the temp sensors.

im starting to think its a coil dropping out. I have a box of spare parts along with 6 spare coils so saturday i think is going to be a test and tuning kind of day.

You will need a cds, mercury,s computer diagmostic system. but you need to check the TPI, throttle position sensor. it must be near or over, 4.5 volts, at wide open throttle. it is just an easy static, non running test. the tpi controls fuel delivery. that may be the only problem.

A friend of mine is a merc tech he has the software but he has been super busy so i have been trying to figure it out on my own. (I like to tinker).

As for the tpi/tps. Where am i looking for 4.5 volts at? The tps itself has 3 pins. Does the key need to be on for this test?
