Painter by trade - automotive and if your not going to flip it and gel coat it , first choice . I suspect urethane to be a good choice .High quality - high solid urethane is the next best. Prep work is the first step to the top coat and of course straighten it out a bit and sand it and do edges well . You sure you can't buff the gel coat and continue to keep the original sir , that's always a nice way to keep original and costs nothing other than compound and some work . That's is good advice . Keep it original and when you sell it its still original .

I have sprayed a lot of boat bottoms with Dupont Imron and I have seen nothing better. I had a boat in the water for three months straight and not one blister. If there is something truly better I have not seen it yet.
Best wishes, Carter Powell

Nothing Trully Better and Also Deadlier
Imron is tough and will flow over surface inclusions like no other. But it is also deadlier (polyisocyanate). Only way you fool with this stuff is with a full up air fed disposable tedlar suit and helmet and nitrile gloves. Don't be stupid enough to spray Imron with a Covid19 N95 mask. Fumes will eventually kill you. I'm not even sure if you can buy Imron from a distributor without being certified on how handle and use it. Dupont Centari is just as nasty.

We did a 1968 aluminum starcraft with imron in the 80’s. This boat is still owned by the same guy and it lives in the water from april to ovtober every year and it still looks as good as it ever did. Tough tough paint
but yes, quite hazardous be carefulHydrostream dreamin
