Wire with pulley cable steering vs Hydraulic steering on race boats

Been considering another boat, is their a particular reason race boats seem to have the steering system with wires and pulley?

I can't see how this set up would be better than a hydraulic set up?

can someone fill me in why this would be chosen?

Ok, I can understand it being lighter, and I suppose the feeling is more sensitive. I suppose it is a preference?

I have had many different systems over the years. All the real fast stuff had string. It felt like you hand the boat and motor in your hand as opposed to just a steering wheel. My fishin boat had dual cable and ran 90-95. When I went from dual cable to hydraulic I initially thought I ruined my boat. After a short period of time I fell in love with the hydraulic. Any boat I own that will carry more than one person will have hydraulic from here on. It is as much the application as anything else.

I'm thinking the twin cable with torque sense assist at the helm might be best of both worlds
then linear electric servos will trump all of that stuff, boat riggers will love it, bolt motor on, fit helm, plug loom together and bingo steering.
Dont we all love electric controls?

The closest analogy I can come up with is like comparing driving your power steering Impala to a go-cart. There is that much difference.

Because with cable pulley you can actually feel what your boat is doing and you don't need to continually turn it to keep going straight. Also, it's not 100 turns lock to lock like juice steering is, when you move the wheel, it turns NOW.

I will bet that the fastest boats in the world have a hyd steering system in them. A light weight, purpose built boat on the other hand can use the string and pulley steering and benefit from it. HAHA Bad, your stirring it up....BTW Paw-paws bass boat might out run 90% of the boats on here too....

I wont own anything but Hydraulic ever again. Makes docking and idle turning a breeze as well. I can take my hands off the wheel at wide open throttle and the boat stays straight. No left arm soreness and steering torque

You might want to try a fast boat with a really well designed hydraulic system. My Progression 22 (not a 4 stroke, trash barge or pontoon boat) has a Latham Single Ram / Wing Plate hydraulic system and it doesn't take 100 turns to go lock to lock. (Nowhere near it in fact.) Sure, it doesn't have the tactile feel of a string and pulley system, but I can safely take my hands off the wheel at 75 MPH because it totally eliminates torque feedback through the wheel. I'll never go back to any type of cable system ever again. Now if it were a river or small lake high performance or race boat, the answer might be different.

Extremely fast V-bottom driver told me that he would have nothing but cable/pulley steering and wont use the bottom seat cushion so that he can feel the boat. XR2001 Allison. However I must say that I do enjoy the hydraulic steering in my new to me River Rocket. Anyone know why the steering wheel keeps moving around and round a little? Shouldn't it return to center and stay in the same position?
