    Smile super speedmaster

Hi everyone,I'm new here so I hope you will put up with some dumb questions. I have a Carlson contender with a 150 merc with a SSM lower unit. I'm wondering how to properly change the gear lube in the SSM as it has no bottom drain plug like most other lowers. Also the top plug is marked "vent". Should it have a hole in it? Any particular gear lube recommended? Are these lowers as delicate as some say?

    Thanks for any info, abbeynormal

About the only way to drain one is to pull it and lay it over. I wish they had a drain some days. The vent is the case vent when you change lube. I have a hand pump that I screw into the fill and a clear hose that I screw into the vent. I pump fresh oil into the case until the old oil has run out though the vent. I save my old oil in a clear glass jar until it settles and then I run a very strong little magnet in it before I get rid of it. I've been using Sierra Hi-performance synthetic for more than 20 years with no oil related problems, My SSM's have held up pretty good over the years. You have to take care of them and they will hold up if your not trying to push a ton of boat.

    Cool Ssm

Dave, Thanks for the reply. I was afraid the only way to drain was to take it off. Not a big deal as long as its not needed every time I run it as some guys have said.

I have a Mercury Super Speedmaster lower unit made about 1964. It is Left Hand rotation and is stamped (972LH). The waterpump faceplate is for only one crank rotation direction as it has just one discharge piecut. The way the faceplate fits on the lower unit puts the discharge piecut on the Port side. Is this correct for a right hand (looking down at the flywheel) rotation engine?
Who might carry repair parts for the Super Speedmaster lower units?
I will be running this lower unit on my 1967 Merc 1100SS with a Bonneville tower on my 12 foot homebuilt Sande Ace runabout.
