I guess you’re going back with plywood since you’re just doing a partial recore?

Yes, there is some balsa a few feet forward but it seems ok so I am using 1/2" ply.

Tried everything I know to get this picture to post right side up. Rotated it upside down and posted, made a copy and posted, copied directly from the camera and posted, rebooted and posted.....I am losing my mind.....I SWEAR it is right side up on my phone and 'puter...

Oh well.... here is the knee I made in the keel, It will tie in to the bottom of the well. The four stringers will be 3/4" white pine and they will also have small knees.

I'm not certain but I think 1/2" ext plywood would be stronger and lighter than 3/4 pine...and a better bond. What are your reasons for using the pine....maybe I'm all wet???

Actually I am replacing the wood like I found it. The center stringer (keel) was 1/2" ply but the stringers were pine. I was impressed how tough they were to remove after having cut through the fiberglass with a cutting wheel. I am sure you are correct about the ply being lighter, but I would have to special order to get a sheet long enough to make the 9 foot stringers. I suspect that is why the PO used pine shelving.

Looking good .... Might need more tape than that to really lock in that stringer in place though ... Jus Kidding.. Thought our winter was over here last week...then we got a few inches snow yesterday...
Looks like we might bypass spring and go right to summer.

Thanks, I had bedded the stringer in polyester putty and kitty fur and just needed it to stand straight till it went off. It has 2 layers of 1 1/2oz CSM on it now, and a layer of 1708 stitchmat and a layer of CSM attaching the knee to the transom. I think it will stay upright now.... ;^)

    Sure miss global warming...

We had 80 degrees here yesterday and a freeze warning for tonight?

As long as it's sealed, pine is a good stringer material. Used it many times for the exact reason stated. Comes in longer lengths than ply. And as long as it is dry, absorbs resin and bonds good. The plywood core is very old school and will work also. Strongest core possible imo. Tap on the bottom of a ply cored boat and it will ring like a bell.

I can confirm plywood is strong when trying to remove it. Bonded good too...That's why I didn't core the whole boat. My Viper was way easy to get the old balsa core out of compared to this one. As to the pine, all the grain is going in the direction that provides strength as opposed to ply where some layers of the laminate go in the direction easiest to break from shearing force. Anyway, like I said, it's going back the way it was built when I got it....
